Accelerated Learning Summer Program

Language development involves several systems. Children must master word meaning and acquire a facility with the forms of language. Children diagnosed with language impairment or developmental language delays are at high risk for reading disorders without interventions. The phonological-awareness deficits place them at risk for difficulties in learning decoding skills and reading comprehension skills.

The language development sessions provide intensive targeted instruction by a speech and language pathologist. This high-impact intervention promotes language growth and, in particular, focuses on phonological awareness reducing the child’s risk of experiencing difficulty with reading comprehension long-term.

The key to literacy is engaging in research-based practices, including explicit and systemic phonics instruction. Some students need more intensive instruction in this area than what is provided during the school day. 

The decoding skills session provides intensive instruction by an Orton-Gillingham or Wilson trained instructor. This additional instruction can accelerate learning and provide students with the necessary decoding skills to engage with literary text.

Reading comprehension is a multifaceted task requiring the ability to process text, understand its meaning and integrate with what the reader already knows. The complexity of this task requires students to be proficient in a wide variety of skills. If one skill breaks down, the student’s ability to comprehend can be negatively impacted.  

The reading comprehension session provides targeted instruction by a reading teacher. The individual sessions are designed to fill specific gaps with this high-impact tutoring.

The study of mathematics involves sequential skills learning. When one skill is missing, the impact on future success in learning is at risk. Each new concept introduced in the classroom is a foundation for new learning. Successful learning requires a strong foundation in mathematic concepts.  

The math skills session is individually tailored and begins at the learning gap. Through targeted, intensive instruction, specific gaps are filled, and the foundation for learning is strengthened.

At home, students will be able to work on their own level, engaging in math skills-based practice using Renaissance Learning’s Freckle Math software.

Writing is a multifarious task, and many different gaps can cause difficulties. Written expression involves the ability to express thoughts in writing. This requires expressive language skills, technical skills like spelling and grammar, and organizational skills. Deficits in any of these areas can make school challenging.

The writing sessions provide intensive instruction by an ELA teacher focused on specific skill areas. Students will strengthen their writing skills as they work on one targeted area at a time through high-impact instruction.

 Interacting with groups of ten students or less of similar age, a speech and language pathologist and licensed family counselor will guide students through a wide variety of fun and safe activities designed to teach social skills. Students will be exposed to new skills and techniques for peer interaction throughout the week. The program focuses on reading non-verbal cues, conversation rules, making good choices, friendship, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
