The Cornerstone is Laid

We have had an awesome week! I hope you have too. Counseling held a workshop for parents about paying for college and we had a fire drill. Then there were lots of preparations that culminated into Mini Day at MSA. Mini Day seems to have been a success - thank you for being patient (and creative) with the parking. We also spent the week being CREATIVE all over campus, make sure you check that out below - I posted some things on Facebook and Instagram about that this week as well.

Exciting things have been going on with the construction project. They have begun to lay down the cement footings for the building, the foundation is next. You can keep up with our construction PROJECT HERE. It may be just coincidence, but an interesting fact is that on this day in 1793 the cornerstone was laid for the Capitol building in Washington DC. You can read more about THAT HERE. So while we wait for some of the cement to dry, have a great weekend!

All through the week our Fine Arts department has been hard at work showing us how creative they are, from art outside on campus to art inside the classroom. So I want to share some of that with you throughout the newsletter.

CA Student in the Civil Air Patrol

It's not unusual to see 11th grade student Corinne Davenport change into a military uniform every Thursday afternoon. "I've been a member of the Civil Air Patrol for a couple of years now," stated Corinne. "We study search and rescue, aerospace rocketry, leadership skills, and get to take five airplane flights before I turn eighteen," she added. Although she doesn't plan on joining the military, Corinne loves everything she's getting to do in the Civil Air Patrol, and recommends that any student who loves the outdoors and aviation to join.

Summer College Art Program

Guest Journalist - Rachel Fisher

I attended two art based programs this summer. The first one I attended was a week at SCAD.  Even though I had the option to commute every day I decided to live in the dorms to get a real college experience. During my time at SCAD I was in two different programs, drawing the human figure and fashion textiles. I enjoyed both classes a lot. The instructors were amazing and I really grew as an artist and learned a lot. During my time at SCAD, we went on a field trip almost every night. We went to the High Museum, Piedmont Park, the Georgia Aquarium, and SCAD’s Theater. I made seven incredible friends who I still talk to and see all the time. Meeting them was incredible and the experience was life changing and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. A week later I left for New York to attend Marist College for two weeks.  READ MORE

Coral Fragging

Coral Fragging is the surgical process of propagating or cloning coral animal colonies. It involves any number of techniques depending on the species, but all corals that are not single polyp varieties can be fragged to produce new colonies ... the ocean's awesome! Creativity Week 3 of 4

Lower School students in Kate McElliott’s drama class enjoyed being dramatic and creative during Celebrate Creativity Week! The trees were decorated by MSA staff and students after MSA art students painted the decorative designs!  Pictured are Gwyn Heath, Edward Gorgoll, Seth Horwitz and Milan Pekez. Also pictured is our Uni-stang!

Portfolio Review!

Senior Marshall Stoddart participated in a portfolio review in the MSA studio with Janet and Brenda.  His parents were part of the process as well. He brought in all of his best work (laid out across the tables) and the art teachers helped him to decide what direction to go to create fantastic more work toward a scholarship for art school.

Next Man Up

The Mustangs went back to work as they ventured out of conference and prevailed 2-1 over arch rival Academe of the Oaks. Without six starters from the previous game, the depleted Mustangs got on the board early when Wesley Site successfully finished on an offensive Corner Kick play. "Wesley is one of those players who has a nose for the ball; and when the situation presents itself, he comes up big." However, AO answered the Mustangs' Charge; and at the half, the game was all square at 1-1. "Overall we have to be more disciplined in what we are trying to do and accomplish. Defensively, we have to run to our zone, keep Ball-You-and-The Man Principle, stay in front of the ball, shrink the field, and stop chasing the ball like a Labrador Retriever."

With both teams trying to impose their Offensive will, the second half featured MSA's Offensive relentless motion attack against AO's sideline break and passing game.   READ MORE

Taking a Political Stand

How can students in Georgia make a difference on a Lakota reservation in South Dakota?  Seven members of the Native American Club discovered that their voices can be heard as they visited the offices of Senators David Purdue and Johnny Isakson this week.  Students presented the sobering statistics relating to social and economic issues to the Senators representatives, and made an impassioned plea for the Senators to support any legislation that could give economic relief to the Lakota people.  Although the Senators were in Washington, State Director for Senator Purdue, Joyce White stated that she was very impressed by the commitment by the students for Little Wound High School, and would pass along the students’ presentation to the Senator.  She noted that “you students have made a better presentation than many adults.”  Ryan Pelfrey, Field Representative for Senator Johnny Isakson, was amazed that the MSA students could speak Lakota:   READ MORE

One Word

Last week I asked you to give me ONE word that you would use to describe Mill Springs Academy. Above is the word cloud that includes those words. The bigger the word the more frequently it was provided. THANK YOU!

Hamming It Up

Members of the Mill Springs Ham Radio community joined their colleagues in the North Fulton Amateur Radio League at Sunday’s Braves game.  Bob Citronberg, a member of NFARL, arranged to get complimentary tickets for all members of NFARL who were interested in attending the game and made a special point of inviting the student hams at MSA and their families.  Five students, their families, and Martha accepted this invitation and watched the Braves take on the Mets at Turner Field.  Several other members of NFARL were seated directly behind the two rows of MSA folks.

Though the Braves eventually lost in overtime, it was a great game, with great weather, and great fun. Pictured are Josh Drew (KM4MVK) and his father Jay.

ConnectAbility

Last Saturday several Mill Springs students, parents, and teachers participated in the ConnectAbility 5k/10k race in Dahlonega. PreUpper student Jordyn DeNardo was an age bracket winner for the 5k. Carolyn Shapiro (Lower teacher), Kelli King (Middle teacher), Paige Norris (Upper student), and her mom Judy also ran. Music teacher Kate McElliott (who chairs the race) sang the national anthem. Middle School student Alex Yager and mom Krista volunteered on the course along with Kate's family. They gave out water at the water station and participation medals as runners crossed the finish line! The race raises funds to provide services for individuals with disabilities and their families in North Georgia. Pictured: Paige and Judy Norris with teachers Kelli King and Carolyn Shapiro.

Lesson in Exponential Growth

Sam’s Senior Algebra and Trigonometry class learned about the power of exponential growth by demonstrating it physically with poker chips. The class was replicating a story about the inventor of Chess a long time ago. When Chess was invented the local king was so pleased that he offered the inventor any reward he could name. The inventor was very clever and knowledgeable about math, and made this request: for the king to take a chessboard and place one grain of rice upon the first square. Then, place two grains of rice upon the second square, four upon the third, eight upon the fourth, and so on, doubling the number of grains each time until the chessboard was filled. The king quickly agreed. But Sam’s students discovered what you can see in the photo, where we substituted poker chips for grains of rice; doubling the amount each time causes exponential growth which   READ MORE
