A Three-Day Weekend

This week offered some great events which began on Saturday with a wine tasting, Monday began the string of school portraits through the week, Tuesday brought the PVA meeting, Wednesday the counselors held the College Coffee Talk, and finally Thursday was Curriculum Night for Lower & Middle, which I heard was "Fabulous". All of that activity has kept us busy, so we are looking forward to this three-day weekend and hope you are too!

I have one last vacation picture to share with you Jacobi Garrett (pictured) from Upper School fed the alligators in Orlando at Gatorland.

Have a great weekend and we will see everyone on TUESDAY!

Art of the Week

This Japanese inspired block print was created by Michael Bowers in the 8th grade of PreUpper.

Feature Teacher

                  Meet Brenda Smith!

Brenda is new to Mill Springs this year and teaches Studio Arts, Sculpture & Media design to 5-12th graders. She has past experience in advertising where she created printed corporate ads and product catalogs. After she had her own children, she remembered the joy of working with young artists and found her way back into the art room and never looked back. Her goal in teaching art is "to help my students to see that art, design, and artistic expression can be found everywhere in our increasing visual world." She loves how creative her new art students are and they are doing some amazing work in the art room. She feels her role is "to help them fine tune their own skills so that they will be able to visually express themselves more clearly and to discover the joy in the artistic process." She can't imagine doing anything else. Even though Brenda has only been here a short time, she sees how friendly and supportive the students and staff are of each other. She told me that "it is a warm and welcoming environment that makes each day enjoyable."

Outside of school, she has a hard time deciding what her favorite food is, but when nailed down she picked cheesecake. In her spare time she loves to go on adventures and play games with her husband and two boys. She also enjoys working on her own art and cooking (in that order). Currently she is reading Cooks Illustrated magazine in search of the best recipe for the Labor Day cookout. A little known fact about Brenda? "I like to tap dance."

Welcome to Mill Springs Academy Brenda.

Alumni News

We had a couple visitors this week, first of all Patrick Marco from the Class of 2009. Then Sharon Peterson, Class of 1984, came to visit with the counseling department. She herself is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker helping children with difficulties similar to those with which she grew up. She said a lot had changed since she attended MSA including the location of the campus. "We would have LOVED to have had all the amenities the kids have today, way back in the eighties!"

Volleyball on Fire!

The Varsity Lady Mustang Volleyball team had their first win of the season. They beat Cottage School in 3 straight games!! The girls were led by match captains Morgan Graves and Sara Edge. We had some great serving from new player Elli Flagg that helped the team get off to a very strong lead. Sara Edge led the team in assists and set up many kills for Samantha Benjamin. There were also great defense plays made by Victoria Toscano and Sydney Pipes. All the girls played an integral part in the win for the team and played well together as a team. We are looking forward to this being the first of many wins this season.

Tips for Using the Calendar

Did you know that when you use the calendar, either on the website or within MUSTANG (look for Calendar Tools), you can pick and choose how you view it and what you would like to see? The calendar opens up with everything visible and in the LIST VIEW. You can toggle it to GRID VIEW by clicking the first icon circled above. In MUSTANG, you have Month, Week, Day, and Agenda view buttons above the calendar.

You can CUSTOMIZE YOUR CALENDAR (what you view) by clicking on the second icon, with the eye in the middle. That pops open the list to the left (if you click READ MORE, you will see the list). By deselecting and selecting exactly what you want to see, you can view just some things, or everything.

For example if you only wanted to see the Varsity Boys Soccer schedule, you would uncheck everything BUT that. In MUSTANG, this list is visible in the left margin. READ MORE

Public Open House

Wednesday, September 9

9:00 - 11:00am

Student Activity Center

If you know someone that might benefit from attending MSA, please invite them to an Open House or better yet bring them! In case you haven't attended an Open House, it provides prospective parents with an overview of the school, a wonderful Fine Arts presentation, at least one parent and one student perspective, a tour of the school and an chance to speak with the principal. It's a great opportunity for them to get a feel for what we are all about. Word of mouth is by far the biggest way families find their way to Mill Springs and we know that you sometimes have the chance to be "Mill Springs on the Street", we thank you for sharing MSA!

Target & PVA

Do you have a Target REDCard? If so, register your REDCard at www.target.com and select Mill Springs Academy as your school of choice. Every time you shop at Target (in store or online) and use your card, 1% of your purchases will be donated to our school.

Mother Vowel

The 1st graders were so very excited to have Mother Vowel (a.k.a. Donna Moore) visit this week. Mother Vowel makes an annual visit to class each year. Mother Vowel teaches how all of her five babies (babies a, e, i, o, u) got their short vowel names and sounds. It is a wonderful story that the students really enjoy and helps them to remember the short vowel sounds. What fun!! Pictured L to R: Sam Lesser, Max Young, and Daniel Moses.

Appreciating the Lakota Way

Those drum beats you heard in Communication Arts weren't the sounds of your heart throbbing. . . it was Native American specialist Jim Dunham dancing and singing in the Lakota language. Students learned the history of the Lakota from the time they hunted buffalo without horses, all through modern times where they suffer many socio-economic challenges. "Jim really brings the history of the Lakota people alive," said teacher Chelsea Michelson. This was especially valuable since we will be visiting our Lakota sister school on the Pine Ridge reservation in October." Teacher Jay Hudson added, "This gives our students a deeper appreciation of the beauty of the Lakota music and art work." "The headdress was so cool," exclaimed student Michael Martin.  READ MORE
