Busy Time for Admissions

We are a week away from Honors Day and you can tell everyone is ready for school to be out.  This week we hosted the AAC Awards reception, we held an open house, we began exams for 7-12th graders, we had our last day of PM Program Thursday, and we are excited to do some road work on campus (the moment school is out). As I am typing this Lower School is holding their end of the year party complete with snow cones and cotton candy - more info next week. Things are winding down for the students, everything except admissions! We already have over 300 students signed up for next year! There are a handful of current students we believe to be returning, as well as some new families lined up to come next year. We had a well-attended open house, and there are interviews already set up for some of those individuals. This is the busy time for admissions.

We are looking forward to Honors Day (aka the last day of school) and hope that you will be a part of it as well. The countdown has begun - there are FIVE (5) school days left! Enjoy your weekend.

Success in School ... Success in Life

A Note of Thanks

I would like to thank Tim Ray for hosting my Lakota Sister School boys during their visit here. The boys had a ball at his house, and especially enjoyed the rides on the four-wheeler. Tim has even kept in touch with one of the boys since his visit and given him encouragement to accept an offer from Yale University. I'd also like to thank Sylvia and Bill Taylor for hosting the Lakota girls. Bill & Sylvia know the way to a girl's heart, and not only housed them, but took them to the mall. Although we ended up not needing them to house the kids, I'd additionally like to thank Becky Lamp'l and Leah Allen for offering to help with our Sister School kids while they were here. And finally, thanks to Chrissie Reed and Jinjie Cicco for providing the kids with lunches and snacks while they were here. Thanks to all of you for helping to make our Little Wound friends feel happy and welcome!

Annual Pet Day!

Lower School celebrated their annual Pet Day last Friday. The students look forward to this special day all year long, and are so excited that they can bring in their beloved family pet to show off. This year we had 3 bunnies, a gecko, an African Grey parrot, a cat, and many, many dogs!!! Pictured is Mr. Hagedorn explaining that the parrot could possibly live over 100 years while Sam Benton and Porter Heskett look on. It was so much fun to see everyone's pet. Thank you to all of the parents for taking time out of your busy schedules to drive here to bring your pet for our special day!

There are book drops located in the PreUpper entrance and the Upper commons area. Books may also be dropped off in the library.

Let Ms. Brittany know if you have any questions. Thank you!

A Note of Thanks

Thank you to ... Sue Nemesh!

Many thanks to Sue Nemesh, a Middle, PreUpper, and High School parent that so graciously accompanied 13 fifth and sixth graders to the Georgia Aquarium on an overnight trip. The students' comments were as follows: Mrs. Nemesh, thank you for going and thanking the time to help the Level L and R students learn more about the Aquarium. I appreciate you helping me set up my sleeping bag and getting wristbands so that we could stay longer on Sunday. Because of your nice gesture, I got to see the Dolphin show on Sunday! You were a GREAT chaperone for this trip!

Reflections from the Realm ...

Michael Griffeth's (MG) 1st period, 8th Grade Literature class was asked to write a reflection on their class experiences. Here are a few of those thoughts:

Luke Sherrill: Before 8th grade, I would never read unless it was for an assignment...If it wasn't for this class, I never would've discovered the enchantment of reading.

Maddie Hahn: I have become a way better writer and since this class was never stressful, I was able to take my time and produce quality work.

Christian Speir: What I've enjoyed about this class is that I've always been supported by MG and I feel like I am a better writer because of that. I never thought I'd be a good writer but since I've been in this class, my writing has gone places I never thought it would or even could.

Glow Show

On Monday, Lower School, had a wonderful opportunity to attend a Glow Show in PreUpper. The show was led by PreUpper science teacher, Martha Muir, and her ACE students. Prior to the show, Martha and her students made each Lower School student a glow-in-the-dark shirt. Each student was also given a glow stick. The Glow Show was fantastic! Martha and her students performed many science experiments, but some of the crowd favorites were "Apple Cups," "Hammer Kinetics," and "Can Crusher." Milan Pekez shared, "The Glow show was great! They used a frozen banana as a hammer! They crushed cans using air! It was awesome!" Thank you to Martha and the ACE students for putting on a terrific show. (Pictured are Lower School teachers involved in an experiment.)

The Social Scene

Wanna know what's going on here on campus during the summer? Join us on the Social Scene. We have a few Pinterest boards with helpful and/or interesting information for parents, students and teachers. You can also follow us on Twitter (@millspringsacad) or Like us on FaceBook (Mill Springs Academy). We’ll post some things through the summer that might be interesting, like construction pictures! Keep in mind there won't be the MSA Weekly News to keep you informed, so let’s get together on the Social Scene!

Pizza Party

PreUpper Students Garrett Cutchin, Ian Partain, Christian Speir, and Collins Losson enjoy the end of year Band pizza party! The kids danced, sang Karaoke and had a ball!

Ready for Summer Reading?

As you may know, Mill Springs Academy uses a resource called Bookshare (www.bookshare.org) to get accessible digital books and reading tools for school. This service is free through an award from the Office of Special Education Programs, US Department of Education. Members can also use Bookshare at home for free, getting access to hundreds of thousands of titles and free reading tools to assist with homework or independent pleasure reading.

This year we are enabling individual student memberships to Bookshare for all students. As virtually all our students are minors, parents are required to apply online or via mail and accept provisions of the membership. If you want to sign your child up for their own Bookshare account email Claire Christerson, cchristerson@millsprings.org, and she will send you an individualized form with activation ID for your student. For other questions, contact Paul Barkley, 770.360.1336 or pbarkley@millsprings.org.

Do it now so you are ready for Summer Reading.  ;)

Effective July 2, 2014, all children born on or after January 1, 2002, who are entering 7th grade, and new entrants* to Georgia schools in grades 8-12 will be required to have Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) and Meningococcal Conjugate vaccines before entering school for the 2015-2016 school year. Visit your family physician to get these vaccines now.

*New entrants include anyone that is entering Georgia schools for the first time or is returning to a Georgia school after being gone for more than 12 months or one school year.

Character isn't inherited. One builds it daily by the way one thinks and acts, thought by thought, action by action.
