Key to Success

Alexander Graham Bell said, "before anything else, preparation is key to success." The week has been full of preparation. We are busy preparing for the Book Fair and the Family Dinner. We also held a successful fire drill, preparing for emergency. Preparing for college with the College Coffee. The seniors are making final preparations for their Senior Presentations. Of course the students are preparing for Spring Break - I'm sure the teachers and parents are as well. Let it all be a success!

You will notice that sprinkled throughout this Weekly News issue there are some thank you notes from Middle School students to the Lower School in appreciate for the Dragon Tale play they shared. I sat in on the presentation to Middle School as they watched their peer Nick Tompkins star in the play. He did a terrific job and it was a wonderful event; I hope parents were able to take advantage the daytime presentation this past Friday.

As we contemplate spring break plans, make sure to take the Spring Break Survey as you read the Weekly News. It may be spring, but we are going to have winter weather this weekend - bring your plants in tonight and tomorrow night - dogs and kids too.  ;)

Feature Teacher

Meet Gail Kreher!

Gail has been teaching in our Upper School for 13 years. Her classes consist of the Senior Research & Composition and American Literature & Composition. Eleven of those years included advising 124 issues of Kickin' It Monthly. Before she came to MSA she taught at South Forsyth HS for 10 years and before that she worked as a weathercaster for a few different TV stations along the east coast. When asked what she loves about MSA she mentions the "sunny, delightful space, the freedom to teach with creativity and inspiration, as well as our amazing, never-boring TEENAGERS!" Her philosophy remains, "I want to light a fire for excellence within each of my students, to inspire them to realize and harness their intelligence and talents, spark for life, and to savor the resulting sense of accomplishment after pouring on all the effort they can muster." Gail is a celebrated, award winning teacher, the receipient of Disney's national Creative Teaching Award, "They chose me out of 10,000 applicants! It was an amazing experience!"

Life outside of Mill Springs includes reading Margaret Atwood's dystopian novels, questing to find the answer to the "Great Question of Being", her love of white flowers, and walking in the woods. She craves salads, but also enjoys "an unhealthy relationship with frozen yogurt and M&M's". A little known fact is that Gail's voice was used to test the original RCA satellites back in the 1970's!

Thank you for what you do every day Gail!

Baseball's Record Win

The Mill Springs Baseball team broke their career record for runs scored in a game Thursday and did it in only two innings. The "Green Machine" used 17 hits to crush the Howard Hawks in a game that was stopped by the "mercy rule."

Chandler Holt and Ty Harrell held the visitors to just one hit while striking out six. However, the story was the thunder from the MSA bats which resulted in the stampede. Ty Harrell, 7th Grader Tyler Goodwyn, and David Wells each had 3 hits with Ty and David smashing long doubles. Sophomore Brooks Buce ripped a towering triple to the left field fence for his first of two hits. Michael Flanigan also had two hits including a double. MSA scored 9 in the first inning and 19 in the hour long second inning which saw 26 Mustangs come to the plate. READ MORE ...

Thank You for "Dragon Tale"

Dear Lower Schoolers,

Thank you for letting us observe your wonderful play from yesterday. I have to say, you Lower schoolers were packed with potential right when you were supposed to be. I don't think it could get any better than how you did (in a "wonderful" way that is.) I put "wonderful" in, because of the way you were supposed to act.

I would probably have recorded that to remember it, although I didn't have a recorder with me.

Aaron Halbert, 6th Grade, Middle School

The Nature of Exploration

For my 8th grade non-fiction unit, we read Shipwreck at the Bottom of the World (a book that chronicles the story of Sir Ernest Shackleton and The Endurance). We then took a discussion-based test that focused on the nature of exploration. I thought I'd share with everyone a few responses- enjoy.

Why do you think human beings feel the need to explore?

Human beings feel the need to explore because of curiosity. Curiosity has been driving humans to wonder and seek out their own personal questions. Everyone in their life has been curious of something. It's in our nature to seek out the unknown. Inspiration and creativity is what can be found when exploring. Perhaps, it's more than finding answers outside, but answers within ourselves.

The Motion of Music

Guest Journalist - Matt Rankin, Junior, Upper School

These past few weeks, Vaidehi’s Physics classes have been preparing songs themed towards previous chapters we have reviewed. After being divided into teams of two, Thomas Moore and I sat down and wrote a small poem. The poem put together the chapter of motion and we used the definitions and examples given to rhyme our way into a funny little song.

The greatest part was presentation, where each duet got up and sang their song to the class. They were clever ones, funny ones, parodies, raps, and so on. The project itself was a good review of the learned concepts, fun to construct and presenting was a great time.

We are learning about sound, music, frequencies, notes, interference and more. Some students used guitar and played the song while they sang. We plan on using our new project, panpipes, to present our songs again using these instruments to make it an even greater experience and lesson. Pictured: Alex Parman and Dylan Proper  READ MORE

Mill Springs Academy

is holding an Open House!

                               Wednesday, April 15

                                         9:00am

                              Student Activity Center

Did you know that Word of Mouth is by far the largest way families find their way to a Public Open House at Mill Springs Academy? So if you know someone with a child that might benefit from attending MSA, please invite them to our Open House or better yet bring them. If you haven’t attended one, an Open House provides potential parents with an overview of the school, a Fine Arts presentation, a parent perspective and a student perspective, a tour of the school and a chance to speak with the principal. It’s a great opportunity for them to get a feel for what we are all about.

                         THANK YOU for sharing MSA!

Thank You for "Dragon Tale"

Dear Lower School,

Thanks for the show. All of you probably worked really hard on it so thanks. It was really funny, the costumes were really great and the acting was also great. Music and singing was great too. My favorite part was when the dragon came in and was defeated by the mirror and then the mirror broke. It was really great.

From Freddie Butler, 5th Grade, Middle School

Car Physics

Guest Journalist - Maritza Silva, Upper School Senior

On Wednesday during first period physics, Vaidehi took her class out to Thomas Moore’s, Ethan Reish’s, and Zach Goodelman’s cars to look under the hood. We had a mini version of a car shop class. Junior, Thomas Moore says "During physics we discussed rewiring my tail lights and how the circuit worked as well as opening up the hood of Zach G’s & Ethan R’s cars we explained how different parts of the engine function such as the fire triangle, air intake, how the throttle works and the different functions and how they work in harmony.” I think that is a really cool change from our everyday normal class schedule and was really exciting for the kids like Thomas to explain something that they are so passionate about.

Boys Win AAC Tennis Division

Hats off to the varsity boys tennis team as we won the AAC Tennis Division by beating Cottage by a score of  28-12 out of a possible 36 total points on Wednesday.  Jack Minozzi lead the run by winning his singles match with a score of 8-2 and he paired up with Conner Bollinger to win their doubles match by a score of  8-1.

Only two regular season matches..., Oak Mountain yesterday and we travel to Flint River next Tuesday on the 31st.

GISA Region will be at La Grange College on April 15th and the AAC Tennis Tournament that will be held here on April 27th.

Way to go team!

Thank You for "Dragon Tale"

Dear Lower School,

The play yesterday was off the hook. I mean with the face paint and swords. I was impressed about the dragon. I would give it 2 thumbs up. The noise scared me. I wished I could be in the play. Anyway I hope you do a next play soon and I'm looking forward to it.

Michael Fisher, 5th Grade, Middle School

Drama in Forensics

Guest Journalist - Lauren Crisp, Senior, Upper School

A new activity in Vaidehi's Forensics class brought two very different classes together in a quest for education. Patrick Rose's Stage Make-up class took large sheets of butcher paper and adorned them with fake blood spatters. These included both hand and footprints along with different sized spots of fake blood.

Using their new knowledge of how real Forensic investigators analyze blood spatters found at crime scenes, the students of sixth period Forensic Science examined the sheets. They worked in teams to decide what must have occurred to cause the patterns on the sheet.
