Pretty Full of Activity

The week has been pretty full of activity, with it being Homecoming Week and all. I wasn't able to get away from my desk much this week, but I did see some crazy hats - one after my own heart (or head), a Cheesehead! I did see (or hear) lots of cheering going on at today's Pep Rally (woo hoo!!!)! We also had a holiday and an Open House this week. We are preparing to mail out enrollment contracts for the 2015-2016 school year and the Capital Campaign continues having raised nearly $1,400,000 in pledges to date toward our $3 million goal. Make sure you read about JTF below, the kids came home with an amazing trophy and very excited about the entire event. Such awesomeness (is that a word? Who cares, it certainly describes the feelings) around here! You will also want to read all the way to the end so you don't miss the Europe Trip video. Like I said it has been pretty full of activity!

Have a great weekend and we will see you Monday to do it all over again!

A Note of Thanks

Thank you to ... Deborah Super!

Deborah, a Middle School parent, has been helping Brittany in the library every other Thursday with things like Book Fair, shelving books, and helping make Lower School library time creative and fun! The students are always excited to see her, and we are so lucky to have her as a library volunteer. Mrs. Super, we appreciate you so much!

Junior Theater Festival WINS

MSA attended the largest musical theater festival in the world, the Junior Theater Festival (JTF) this past weekend.  Eleven students, grades 5-12, presented a portion of “Guys and Dolls, Jr” for Broadway judges, participated in workshops by Broadway directors, networked with 4,500 other musical theatre students from 102 other schools from across the WORLD, and had a fantastic time!

MSA’s team also WON, from this group of performing arts schools, etc., across the world, a trophy for “Excellence in Ensemble”- meaning that they worked together the best as a TEAM.  In addition, Nick Tompkins was invited by the judges to audition for a Broadway Musical DVD- an amazing experience and honor!  Rich Jullian and Steffi Schneider were selected by judges as our team’s “All Star Performers” and performed a number taught by a Broadway director on stage for the 4500 students. Congratulations!

Congratulations to Brittany Emge, our Librarian. She earned her Georgia certification as a Media Specialist through Valdosta State University. This certification focuses on best practices in Library Media Centers and the many changes school libraries are seeing today. She isn't letting the moss grow under her feet though, she has already begun work on an EdS in Instructional Technology.

 You Got the Power!

It's time to start collecting and turning in those box tops.  We earn $0.10 per box top that we submit for our school.  Also, we will have one special drawing this year for any Mill Springs participant to win a $25 gift card of their choice.  All you need to do, is cut your box tops along the dotted line and submit them in a baggy with your child's complete name on it.  The submission deadline will be February 19.  There are collection boxes in each school.  I will pick them up and put all the names in a drawing.  The winner will be announced by March 15. Also, if you have a student in need of volunteer hours, I can usually use two to three students to help me collect, cut and bag labels.  If you are interested or have any questions, please contact me at dsuper30@yahoo.com.  Thank you so much for your support of Mill Springs Academy. --Deborah Super

Also our supply of paper towel and toilet paper rolls has been depleted. Thanks for any that you can send in to the studio.

Control Keys

Guest Journalist - Aaron Halbert, Middle

You've probably been wondering how the control keys work. I don't mean by plain old keyboard letters, iI mean to hold down Ctrl then press a letter, and it will have an effect.

For Example: Making a word bold without clicking on that B up there; there is a way to do that. Highlight the word(s) you want to bold, hold down Ctrl, then press B, and tadaah! You have it bold without clicking on that B up in the top left corner!

There are ten others I know about! I made a different Word document with that list!

Another Example: If I wanted to undo the word that is in bold without un-bolding it, I would highlight it, hold down Ctrl, and press Z!

If I wanted to go to Galileo, and I wanted to look up WWI, I would have to read through all the information to find it. But there’s a better way! Ctrl+F! If you do Ctrl+F, there will be a small box you can type in on the top left corner of your screen. If you are looking for information about Woodrow Wilson in WWI, just type that in that box, press Enter, and you have the info in no time!

That’s about what I can tell you right now, but remember to look on the list! Eight other than the examples!

WLP - Forensic Science

Guest Journalist - Kendall Heiner, Upper School

In the Forensic Science Winter Learning Seminar Vaidehi and Bonnie designed a whole week of fun while learning so much. We saw new cars at GM (General Motors); where we learned how the car parts work. What causes problems from oil leaks to electronic problems, and we also were able to sit in and start the new corvette. We went to a sheet metal factory, where sheet metal gets turned into many different things. They showed us what tools and machines were capable of doing to each different type of metal, the safety involved with working with metals and the inside parts of a safe! We also watched the movie "Catch Me If You Can" which was about a man who changed his identity and forged checks. The movie goes over every forensic detail that it took for him to get caught. Now he works for the FBI catching other forgers. Now for my personal favorite, the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigation). We talked about how officers ... Read More

Donuts for Dads

Donuts for Dads was the place to be last Friday in Lower School! We loved having all of the dads come in and enjoy doughnuts, fruit, cheese, coffee and juice. The dads were able to visit their child’s classroom to receive special things made by their child, such as poems, letters, artwork, pictures, and much more. The first graders always decorate a tie for their dad that they are supposed to wear to work that day. Thank you all for coming. It was a wonderful morning in Lower School!!

 WLP Library Intern

Jordan Rothberg, a PreUpper student, interned in the MSA library for his second week of Winter Learning. He learned how to scan books in and out of the online library catalog, and he managed the circulation desk when Lower and Middle school classes came to the library all week. In between classes, he learned how to organize and shelve books, find quality book titles online, and helped Brittany process over 70 new books that arrived this week. Jordan also named our new “library pet” blow up t-rex, Tweetie Rex (pictured)! As part of the internship, Jordan wrote a story to commemorate his work throughout the week. Here is a snippet of his imaginative story: “An intern leaving would not mean an end to the magic of the library … The library is always a magical place, and it will be for everyone forever.” Great job Jordan!

Boys Basketball WINS Again

With a dominating 62-47 victory, the Mustangs posted their fourth straight win as they avenged their first game loss to Center Academy. "Offensively, we really came out of the gate cooking. As a team we can score with anyone; and when we share the candy and have good ball movement, we are a very balanced and productive club. On any given night, we have a lot of guys who can finish plays." After a 25-7 point first quarter lead; and behind the strong play of Eric Siegel, Chandler Holt, Jack Minozzi, Michael Flanigan, Jack Buck, and David Wells, the Mustangs ran into halftime with 44-22 advantage.

Midway through the third quarter and with the contest well at hand, the Mustangs turned to their bench to finalize the deal. "Mac Morris, Richard Brooks, Brent Roepe, Wesley Site, Bailey Kiser, and Russell Jones gave us valuable minutes, and their roles are continuing to develop. Read More

 GISA All-Select Band & Chorus

Last weekend, five MSA students participated in GISA’s All-Select Band and Chorus.  This is an annual event, where the best musicians from independent schools all over the state of Georgia come together for a weekend of music and fun. The event was held at Mount Paran, and the musicians spent Friday and Saturday rehearsing, as they prepared a fantastic concert for friends and families.

Upper student Abby Hayman and Pre-Upper student Emily Hyman sang in the All-Select Chorus, and Upper students Paul Bain, Emma Harris, and Samuel Mishkin played in the All-Select Band.  They all did a wonderful job of representing MSA, and we are so proud of their talents, efforts, and enthusiasm!  Please congratulate them on a job well done!

WLP Europe Trip

Eleven Upper School students had an eleven-day adventure of a lifetime touring Barcelona (Spain), southern France, Monaco, Cinque Terre, Florence, Rome, Vatican City, and Pompeii! Students explored freshly-washed cobblestone streets, walked barefoot in the cool sands of the Mediterranean, climbed hundreds of marble steps, and sampled many delicious European meals … and the best gelato on the planet. The trip was beautifully arranged by Upper School Spanish teacher Jaime Gutierrez and included Upper School English teacher, Gail Kreher, and parent Shellie Watson. Click the video button to watch their wonderful video.
