The Dormant Season

Now the parents are ready for a break! This week the students have been busy with activities in Wrestling, Basketball and Band, not to mention studying for and taking exams. All of that activity is wearing down our parents. It will be alright, we only have a few more days and then it will be over. Then it is on to the winter break! The break you are waiting for and deserve after working so hard! (We are looking forward to it as well.)

In and amongst the spray cans and paint cans there is a small nest, there are two little Carolina Wrens that have taken up residence in my garage. (Incidentally this is an annual 'affair' - pun intended.) They are quiet occupants, occasionally leaving a little mess on my car, but basically the only thing left in the end is the nest. We used to clean it out every year, but they would return and rebuild. Now we just leave it and they come and refresh it some. I don't know if it is the same birds (they have 6 year life expectancies), but they come and create new lives together ... in our garage. All of this has me thinking about new beginnings. This is the dormant season for many plants, grasses, and even some animals. So new beginnings are all just around the corner, if we keep our eyes open. Why even in a couple weeks we have the beginning of a new year.

Marshmallows and Forensics

Guest Journalists - Morgan McCurley and Rachel Lamp'l

In Vaidehi Rallapalli's 6th period forensic science class, we made marshmallow guns over the Thanksgiving break. We were given a set of instructions to follow, step by step. This project will be the first of a series of experiments and lessons teaching us about ballistics. Ballistics is a very important part of the world of Forensic Science and much of its evidence is used in criminal proceedings. READ MORE...

12,943!!!

Here is what it says in the note we received from the Atlanta Community Food Bank. We can't say it any better than this:

"Your donations weighted in at 12,943 lbs (10,785 meals)!!! This is simply a jaw-dropping amount. I already knew how amazing Mill Springs is, but it's fun to brag about you time and time again around the office. People simply can't believe it ... I'm so glad both students and staff have so much fun doing the food drive!

Thank you for the incredible work you do."

We have always known that the Mill Springs Community is AWESOME! This is just one more piece of evidence. Thank you for making the Canned Food Drive a success!

 Physics is Electrifying

Guest Journalist - Matt Rankin, Upper

in Vaidehi’s classroom, her classes have been  learning about electricity, series and parallel circuits and terms like resistance, resistors, voltage, current, ammeter and so on.  Our Physics classes had guest speaker, a radio engineer named Jim. Jim uses circuits and current boards to create flowing electricity that transmits signals in places all over the world. He explained the different parts you can find in circuit boards, and in a lab we made our own working LED lights using the different components. It is fun Physics when things work! READ MORE ...

Also, thank you for all of the toys that were donated by attendees to benefit the North Fulton Community Charities Santa Shop!

The Parent Perspective

I recently attended the PoCC {People of Color} Conference in Indianapolis. The conference was designed for leaders, administrators and educators of independent schools. In attending this conference as a parent and not an educator, I did not know what to expect. So in this article, I will try to express two things, what the conference was and what it was not. What I experienced was a chance to learn more about myself, the challenges my daughter has on a daily basis in a majority white school and the difficulty teachers of color have teaching in independent schools. As a parent of an ... READ MORE
