Soak it all in!

What an awesome week we have had! We have celebrated our 8th grade class and our seniors all week long. We had one fabulous band concert, an open house, and Muffins for Moms in the Lower School. Preparations are being made for tonight's baccalaureate and tomorrow's graduation. Next week we have exam reviews, and then finals begin. The end is in sight. I hope you are soaking in all of this wonderful stuff that is going on all around you. We don't get these moments back, so don't miss one thing!

We have much to be thankful for and one of those things are our mothers. Make sure you tell the mother or mother figures in your life Happy Mothers Day. I wish all of our MSA moms a very happy Mothers Day! Pictured (L-R) during Muffins for Moms are Griffin Snell with his mom Heather, Jansen Jones with her mom Suzanne, and Oliver Healey with his mom Angela.

Everyone have an extra special weekend!

Fine Artists of the Week

This week we would like to celebrate EVERY MEMBER of the MSA BAND as the Fine Artists of the Week! On Tuesday and Wednesday, 63 MSA students from 5th - 12th grades entertained friends, families, and fellow students in the Spring Band Concert. The show began with Concert Band, who "rocked your faces off" with the Foo Fighters, Tears for Fears, and AC/DC! Afterwards Symphonic Band took the stage, jamming out to Bon Jovi, Pink Floyd, Saint Motel, and Journey. If you didn't catch our first ever (and probably last ever) MSA Jazz Ensemble's hilarious performance of "Hot Cross Buns," then you totally missed out - it was truly a moment that will go down in MSA Band history!

Congratulations to ALL of our Band members for an EXCELLENT performance and a job WELL DONE!! You are BANDTASTIC!!

Thank you to our Tennis Moms

Vaidehi and I would like to thank the following outstanding moms (listed below) for all of their tireless help with the tennis team. Many of them managed through their own very busy schedules to make our tennis matches. They were most flexible as we had days of rain-outs, long and cold matches that extended past 10:00pm, and indecisive match locations. They kept all of us nourished by providing a huge variety of snacks, water, and Gatorade. They cheered and supported our victories and our defeats. But in the end we came out with the win. But it could not have been accomplished without the help of these great parents. So we thank them, on behalf of the MSA Tennis Team!

  • Lori Kogoy
  • Shelley Middleton
  • Malinda Lackey
  • Jennifer Hall
  • Clare Martin

Thank you,

Vaidehi Rallapalli and Nellie Jackson, Coaches

CommArts Level L/R Trip

Communication Arts just got back from an amazing week at Camp Lookout, just outside of Chattanooga, TN. We went caving, rafting, hiking, zip lining, and so much more! What a great four days for everyone. The students told some great ghost stories while we roasted s'mores each night on the campfire and one night we even had a zombie queen (Chelsea) attack! Every student was brave and completed all of the challenging activities. I cannot wait until we go back in September!

The Test Results Are In!

This year 12 students from Chinese II, III, & IV took part in the first and second levels of the Chinese National Equivalency Test, the HSK, at Emory University on March 24th. With a couple exceptions (because of when the tests were taken), all the scores are in and EVERYONE PASSED! Three students passed with a 95% or higher and all graduating seniors in Chinese IV passed the 2nd level of the test.

HSK Level I - Christian Kelm, Jake Martin, Eli Musgrave, Anthony Papasidero, Robert Papasidero, Jordan Rothberg, Vijay Shah, Christoper Walker

HSK Level 2 - Matthew Dalluge, Paige Norris, Trevor Parkey, Trey Reid

We are so proud of all of you and how far you have come! Congratulations!

It's 8th Grade Week

This week we celebrated 8th graders! Monday we wore our t-shirts (Break's Over go to High School) and had Moe's BBQ catered (pic 1) for lunch. Tuesday we dressed in beach clothes and had an ice cream social to cool off at break (pic 3). Wednesday we started our morning with Waffle House while dressed in our PJ's (pic 2). Thursday and Friday we headed out to do some whitewater rafting and zip lining. What a great way to end a great year in PreUpper. Goodbye 8th graders, you will be dearly missed!

Pet Day

Last Friday the Lower School celebrated their annual Pet Day. We started the week with fun stories about pets. Friday afternoon parents brought in a pet for their child to introduce to the community. We met a bunny, a guinea pig, some ants, two geckos, cats, and dogs. It was great to see so many rescued dogs. A couple of our students have pet horses, but I guess it was a lot of work to try and bring them to MSA! The weather was perfect for our meet and greet. Pictured is Oliver Healey introducing his dog, Rex, to Aiden Burris.

Researching What we Write

In Kaylee's language arts classes, we have been learning about expository writing, most recently focusing on research about US presidents. Students planned their writing by completing a research guide using the Galileo search engine to find encyclopedia entries, eBooks, articles, and more. Our lovely librarian, Brittany, has been such a help throughout the research process, and students loved taking breaks from research to cuddle with Kayso! Students also learned how to cite the resources they used to gather research to avoid plagiarizing other people's work. Then, students wrote rough drafts of their biography research papers in Google Docs so that Kaylee could give feedback throughout the writing process. Finally, students are peer editing with a partner using the comment feature on Google Docs to suggest edits and revisions to their peers. It has been a fun process and we have all learned some interesting information about our former presidents. Pictured are 6th graders, Shannon Callahan and Shaylee Gandhi, taking a break from research to hang out with Kayso the library dog.

Catapulting Trigonometry

In Algebra/Trigonometry we finished up our semester with a final project. The students had to build a catapult and launch a projectile. Noah Terpstra and Connor Gluth worked together to create a pretty simple catapult that packed a lot of punch. Their catapult launched a projectile that landed almost 80 feet away. The students had a lot of fun building their catapults and trebuchets, and they did an awesome job with it! Students were able to find their maximum height using the trigonometry they have learned. Pictured is my 5th period class with their catapults: Paige Norris, Zachary Katz, Connor Gluth, Matthew Cowart, Connor Samsky, Noah Terpstra, and Quinton Day.
