What a wonderful week we have had! We celebrated World Book Day on Facebook with posts all day about who was reading what right now, I know I got a few suggestions from all of that. We had a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Luncheon. There was a fun dramatic group visiting with the Middle and Lower students. There is the Spring Musical - JUST AWESOME! There were also several field trips which I hope we will hear about in next week's MSA Weekly News. The activity level has picked up and I am beginning to feel it winding down; we only have 5 weeks of school left, but 2 weeks until graduation!

Is it Spring yet? It just might be ... finally! The weekend looks like it is going to be pretty. Get out and enjoy some sunshine! Have a terrific weekend.

Fine Artist of the Week

The Fine Artist of the Week is senior Nate Foster. He is given the honor as a tribute to his passion for technical theater. He has worked hard all year in preparation for several events including, but not limited to: One Act competition, Senior Presentations, and the Spring Musical. He is also on the All Set Team that coordinates technology and Fine Arts event set ups. He works hard behind the scenes and deserve recognition or all he does! Nate is pictured in 6th grade as Colonel Hathi the Elephant in Jungle Book.

Thank You Parent Volunteer Association

On behalf of all the teachers and staff, I would like to take this opportunity to say a very heartfelt, "THANK YOU". The luncheon you gave us for Teacher Appreciation Day Tuesday was wonderful. We appreciate the effort that went into all the arrangements, organizing, serving, and decorations. The food and the "Chocolatey Goodness" was terrific. We also enjoyed our afternoon snack bag of cookies. As always, we feel loved and appreciated.

Thank you very much!

Alumni News

Sam Lynch (2017) - Sam (pictured in the plaid shirt) was awarded the Impact Award for cross country at Belmont Abbey College where he goes to school in North Carolina. The Impact Award goes to the student athlete who overall had the most impactful contribution to the success of the program. Congratulations Sam!

Elli Flag (2017) emailed to say that she is really enjoying Clemson and she "made the Dean's List in the College of Business last fall and it looks like my grades will hold up for the Dean's List again this spring!" She further adds that "Clemson is definitely challenging, but I love it!" She is totally taking advantage of all that they have to offer by getting involved in several clubs related to skydiving, whitewater kayaking, and rock climbing. She also joined the women's rugby team recently. The most exciting thing she had to share was that she has been accepted into a study abroad program for the upcoming academic year. She will go to Bond University in Australia. She mentioned that she wanted to "thank MSA and the staff for helping me to get where I am now, I wouldn't have even known my love for Australia without you guys! Miss you guys and see you all at graduation!"

Volunteers Needed

Senior, Matthew Dalluge will be doing his Eagle Scout project at MSA on Saturday, April 28. He is building a set of seven steps that will connect the crosswalk by the front of Lower and Middle with the concrete pad by the Counseling Building. This is a fairly ambitious project with the steps already prefabricated last weekend. On Saturday, Matthew's project entails picking out the dirt on the hillside, insuring that the steps are level, putting in a base of rock and eventually pouring 140 bags of cement to form the steps.

Can you help Matthew TOMORROW? Specifically, we need to be sure we have enough people to do the job. Matthew will have help from his current troop and scouts but he would appreciate plenty of additional workers. For scouts, this counts as service hours towards rank advancements. For others, it could be their chance to get service hours for Level R and L. Because of the tools being used, students MUST be accompanied by a parent especially if they are between 10 and 13.

We will begin on Saturday at 9 AM. We will be serving lunch and will have cool drinks available.

Anyone seeking more information can contact Tom Dalluge at twdalluge@gmail.com or 678 516 6514 or Matthew at school or at mdalluge@millsprings.org.

Thanks for your consideration!

Creativity Comes to Life

This Tuesday, RepTour performed their version of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves for Lower and Middle School. This story performance group out of Elm Street Arts in Woodstock combines theater and literature into a funny and expressive storytelling experience. Our students were laughing out loud as we watched their new version of a familiar story. After their interpretation of Snow White, the RepTour actors did some improv using student-made stories. The on-demand acting style was very funny, and it was very interesting to see how the actors interpreted our student's ideas! We had flying pigs, Minecraft adventures, and "home alone" Publix runs in limousines! It was a fun way for our students to see their creativity come to life.

Middle School Level L/R Trip - 1 of 4

Guest Journalist - Sam Benton, 6th Grade

For our Level LR Trip on April 20, one of our activities was to deliver blankets to the Ronald McDonald House. I loved going to go see the house, it was beautifully built and the purpose of it was magnificent. For people that don't know, the Ronald McDonald house is for families who have children in Scottish Rite Children's Hospital and live too far away to visit them regularly, so the house provides a temporary home for the family of the child. We toured the house and looked around in the rooms. We were able to hear all about what each room was used for. The woman from Ronald McDonald House even allowed us to climb through the three story tree house. To construct the specific Ronald McDonald House we went to, it cost a lot and took so much hard work. The result was, in my opinion, so worth it. I loved this trip and I would consider going to The Ronald McDonald again to work or volunteer when I have time because it was a great experience. Math and Science Day at Six Flags

Last Friday, 8th grade PreUpper students capped off their unit on Physics by participating in Six Flags' Math and Science Day. All day long, students went up to an operating ride, recorded data about that ride, and then calculated things such as speed, acceleration, height, and perhaps even did some conversion practice by determining the maximum number of riders that can enjoy a particular ride that day based on seats available, time to complete a circuit on that ride, and the length of time the park was open that day. This provided hands on practice with the concepts we've been working on in class – in a way that just happened to be lots of fun! As one student summed it up "Best Lab Ever!" Picture 1: Daniel Tarrant, Josiah Altland, and Kevin Binder finish some calculations about the Great American Scream Machine. Picture 2: Several students posed under the entrance for the Superman ride. Picture 3: Lizzy Winn, Kevin Binder, and Lydia Bennett working on calculations for the Acrophobia ride. Does Six Flags simply drop you, speed up your descent, or slow your descent down on this ride?

Planning a Vacation

We recently had a fun project in Personal Finance class. It's called "My Vacation Project". Students have a hefty budget of $10,000 to spend for the whole trip. They must visit at least three different cities outside the USA over a two-week period.

They have to get a plane ticket, rent a car, get hotels, and find a restaurant to eat at every night. The students complete a daily itinerary which includes where they stay, one activity they will participate in, where they will eat dinner, and the total daily cost.

The students also create a brochure for their vacation. This is like an advertisement trying to invite their friends to join them. It includes pictures, approximate cost, and some of the activities in which they will participate. The students really enjoyed this. Hopefully they will actually take this vacation in the future. Or if it's a good one, I will!

Public Open House

Wednesday, May 9

9:00 - 11:00am

Student Activity Center

If you know someone that might benefit from attending MSA, please invite them to an Open House or better yet bring them! In case you haven't attended an Open House, it provides prospective parents with an overview of the school, a wonderful Fine Arts presentation, at least one parent and one student perspective, a tour of the school and an opportunity to speak with the principal. It's a great opportunity for them to get a feel for what we are all about. Word of mouth is by far the biggest way families find their way to Mill Springs and we know that you sometimes have the chance to be "Mill Springs on the Street", we thank you for sharing MSA!

Surprise!

Communication Arts students had a fun surprise when they went on their field trip to the Civil Rights Museum and CNN Center. They ran into their former Lower School teacher, Shannon Koch, who now lives in Florida. They had fun saying hello and catching up. Shannon couldn't get over how grown up the kids are now - they are all taller than her! What a small world!

We are getting close to summer, and with summer comes summer reading. Make sure your tools are ready before you go on Summer Vacation. Here are a couple to consider:

Overdrive

We have access to the popular website and app OverDrive for e-books and e-audio books, which is the same app most of the local libraries are using. Each student has a unique login to check out up to 3 titles for 2 weeks at a time FOR FREE. These are publisher quality e-books, and the audio books are exactly what you'd buy off iTunes or Audible. We have an extensive catalog of titles, check them out! Review the OverDrive Guide, it will explain how to login.

Bookshare

Bookshare is a text-to-speech program available to students who prefer a more audiovisual element to their reading experience. This program is accessible on student laptops and on smart devices via an app, and it offers both fiction and non-fiction titles for both informational and pleasure reading. To set up an individual membership to read on your laptop and devices, please email our Librarian Brittany Emge at bemge@millsprings.org. Learn more about how to access Bookshare books on your devices.

Middle School Level L/R Trip - 2 of 4

Guest Journalist - Seth Horwitz, 6th Grade

Another part of the L/R trip was to participate in two escape games at Mastermind Escape Games in Sandy Springs. The ones we did were the "Bank Heist" room where we were bank robbers and the "Superhero" themed room where we had to escape Dr. Mayhem's evil robot. They were both pretty challenging even for the teachers but they were both extremely fun and tricky. For the bank escape room, we were one clue away from escaping. For the superhero room, we were one digit away from escaping. Overall, both groups agreed that these rooms were the most challenging they have ever done but the cleverest also. Even though we didn't escape, we still bonded, used our critical thinking skills, worked as a team, and had fun.

Annual World Food Day

On Friday April 20th, PreUpper's 7th graders hosted our annual World Food Day. Every student involved did a wonderful job creating a poster, making their dishes, and presenting to our guests that came to taste the different cuisines from all over the world. I am so proud of my students and very thankful to the parents that helped out with preparing the many dishes at home. What a wonderful way to end a great year in World Cultures!! Chemistry in Art

Students in the Honors Chemistry class have been learning about the chemistry involved in art. They studied how weathering can affect certain kinds of metals, and minerals, which would be something that an artist would need to consider, when creating a piece that would be exposed to the elements. The class also learned about metal alloys, and properties of steel. We worked with spring steel in the form of bobby pins, using heat and various cooling processes, to create annealed steel and tempered steel, exploring possible uses in art as a medium, or a tool to manipulate another type of medium such as clay or stone. We also looked at the reactivity of different types of metals, and practiced electroplating metals. The class found it particularly fun to make silver colored pennies and copper colored quarters! Students also learned about hydrates and anhydrates working with various compounds, and applied this knowledge to an artist working with clay. READ MORE  Pictured Matt Cohen

Middle School Level L/R Trip - 3 of 4

Guest Journalist - Temima Izenberg, 6th Grade

For lunch we went to Fuego Mundo. Fuego Mundo is a kosher Latin America restaurant in Sandy Springs. Fuego Mundo is a formal place and the table was set beautifully for us when we arrived. The food was ready 10-15 minutes after we ordered it. Some of my favorite things on the menu are Sancocho (a Latin vegetable soup), Beef Pastelitos, Fried Yucca, Maduros, and a variety of delicious burgers made from Uruguayan beef (a favorite for the Ls and Rs). Here is the website for the menu.  We loved it and think you should check it out!

Pre-Algebra Review

In Nina's Pre-Algebra classes we have been consistently reviewing for our final exam. Over the course of this semester we have worked with the following concepts: repeating decimals, ratios, collecting like terms, basic probability, adding and subtracting integers, distributive property, introduction to equations, volume, pi, multi-step word problems, numbers in a series, two step equations, and percentages – calculating sale costs, tax, tip, etc. We've been working hard preparing for our final the last couple of weeks by reviewing the above concepts via BrainPOP, online math games, and group work. The concept that Pre-Algebra students enjoyed learning about the most this semester was Pi. From learning the formula for Pi to calculating Pi to eating pie on Pi Day this was a definite class favorite!

Presentation ... in Spanish

Monday morning Jaime Gutierrez (Asst. Principal in Upper) attended a 12 minute presentation fully in Spanish by Connor Samsky. "He talked about Madrid. He taught the class about soccer, architecture, Art, Music, and the Spain Royal Palace among other things. Fantastic pronunciation, and on top of that answering questions in Spanish at the end! I wish I was able to speak English the way he speaks Spanish at his age. He was really good when he was in my class, but he has improved a lot! Thanks Maria for working with him. I'm really impressed."

Middle School Level L/R Trip - 4 of 4

Guest Journalist - Brooke Steele, 6th Grade

Last week was such a fun week for the LR students. We all got together in Gretchen's classroom and divided into groups to make blankets. Some of us were cutting slits in the side of fleece and others were tying the strips together. We got to take our shoes off and there was music and the time with friends there helping make these really soft blankets was specil. We stayed in for breaks to make them. On Friday, we delivered the blankets that we made and the blankets, hats, and tutus that the after school art students had made. We took them to Scottish Rite and to the Ronald McDonald House. In all, we delivered about 40 blankets and 20 tutus. (Pictured: Matthew Carlson and Alec Robinson delivering pop tabs, that have also been collected over time in the Middle School, to the Ronald McDonald House.)

Do YOU Take Pictures?

~~Thank you to those that have been sending photos,

I appreciate it very much.~~

If you are prone to take pictures of your Mustang at any of the events, on or off campus, whether you take pictures with your cellphone or a camera, I would love to have them to share on our different social media outlets. When you attend any of the athletics or other activities, please keep me in mind and forward your pictures to pictures@millsprings.org. It's so helpful to have other feet on the street.
