Only 48 More School Days Left

We have had a very event-ful week! First thing Monday, there was Coffee after Carpool, there were spring sport portraits, we held our lock-down drill, right now our high school students are Celebrating Diversity and the PreUpper 7th graders are at Fernbank. PreUpper also has a trip to the Kennedy Space Center over the long weekend. You get a long break, and we have Daylight Saving Time (don't forget). Robert is away attending the National Association of Independent Schools annual conference in Atlanta. Very event-ful indeed!

This weekend may not be very warm (it may not even be dry) but it is still the weekend AND you get 4 days instead of two - so there's that! Did you now that there are only 48 more schools days left?!?

Have a terrific Mid-Winter Break and we will see you all on Tuesday!

Fine Artists of the Week

Please congratulate Addison Monette (11th grade in Upper School) and Bryce Zimmerman (Upper School 10th grader) as our Fine Artists of the Week! In this week's Literary Festival competition they competed against all the other AAA schools in our region in solo singing and Addison won 3rd Place and Bryce won 2nd Place. Bryce will continue on to the state competition on March 20. Both singers sang difficult Italian Classical pieces and then one song in English each. Addison is also working hard as a major role in our Spring Musical, Catch Me if You Can, and Bryce is busy in band at MSA. Bryce also competed as a pianist for Literary Festival earning fourth place. We are so proud of their hard work! Congratulations!

I want to say THANK YOU to Suzanne Jones (mom to Jansen in Lower School) for coming to read to our class on Read Across America Day. She brought a huge collection of books to share with us. We greatly enjoyed her visit to our class.

Thanks Suzanne!

Discovering the Height of a Tree from the Ground

Sam Adam's 6th period Trigonometry class applied the math knowledge they have learned this semester to measure the height of the tall tree standing between CommArts and PreUpper without ever leaving the ground. Trigonometry is the mathematical relationships of the shapes of right triangles. By constructing an imaginary triangle along the height of the tree, the class is able to measure the tree. As an exercise this week, each student took a separate measurement and we found the height of the tree by averaging together all the students' measurements.

Super Study Skills

This week in Study Skills class we will be going over our Study Skills Kit. This Kit has many tools that the student's currently use as well as a few others that come in handy in other classes. For example, visual learners can use highlighters for highlighting key terms or important information. Graph paper can help line up numbers in a math problem. Each tool is listed by picture and gives a description of how each tool can be used in a variety of places. We will add to our Kit as the year continues. We are always coming up with helpful tools to help each other learn best.

Public Open House

Wednesday, March 14

9:00 - 11:00am

Student Activity Center

If you know someone that might benefit from attending MSA, please invite them to an Open House or better yet bring them! In case you haven't attended an Open House, it provides prospective parents with an overview of the school, a wonderful Fine Arts presentation, at least one parent and one student perspective, a tour of the school and an opportunity to speak with the principal. It's a great opportunity for them to get a feel for what we are all about. Word of mouth is by far the biggest way families find their way to Mill Springs and we know that you sometimes have the chance to be "Mill Springs on the Street", we thank you for sharing MSA!

Unique Species

In World Geography we have been studying the geography, history, and climate of Australia. We have discovered that there are many unique species on this island continent so this week we explored the further. Each student did an "Animal Short Report" on a different Australian animal. Students gave detailed descriptions of the animal as well as completed research. Some information they gathered was the average weight of the animal, what it eats, if it has any predators, if it is endangered, and what makes the animal unique. In the photo Jamie Dukes is showing off the picture he drew of a KOOKABURRA bird. He stated that the most interesting fact that he learned about the bird is that they have a very loud call that is often mistaken as laughter.

Mardi Gras Success = Great Things for MSA

The PVA would like to thank everyone who participated in our fundraiser, the Mustang Mardi Gras! The event raised over $24,000 and we received a donation of a commercial color printer from Konica Minolta Business Systems! Whether you attended the event, donated an item to the auction or provided wine, gift cards or money, the success of our event was because of you and we appreciate your support!

One of the goals of the PVA is to fund raise for our school which is accomplished by our Chick-fil-A program and the Mardi Gras. This allows us to fund things like our semi-annual Teacher Appreciation Luncheons and Campus Beautification Days as well as big things like the outdoor Amphitheater and a school bus. Occasionally we receive grant requests from the school and provide additional training for teachers like the Google Training that took place in the fall or new furniture for the Library.

The PVA will continue to give back to the school this year and into the future. Currently the main goal of the Mustang Mardi Gras is to be able to support the next MSA Capital Campaign which will include a Fine Arts Building. We are excited to be able to be a part of this campaign and we could not do it without you! Thank you!

Harry Potter and The Magic Treehouse series books were the most popular among the Lower School students. We ended the day with a Dr. Seuss Fab Friday.
