Thank You to Tina Lillard I would like to thank Tyler's mom..., Ms. Tina Lillard for volunteering her time and energy to the wrestling team this year. We appreciate all she does and what she has done this season for the team. --Coach James Sampson and Coach John Hanrahan
Feature Teacher This month's Feature Teacher really isn't a teacher, but is the Upper School Admin. She is Lisa Imsand! Lisa started as a volunteer 14 years ago, eventually joining the staff in 2004. Then her son graduated from MSA in 2006 - she stayed and has been here all that time. She said, "Obviously MSA is like family to me, since I couldn't leave even after he graduated." Lisa likes being here because she is getting paid to do something she loves. Before coming to MSA she was a full-time mom and prior to that she was an LPN working as a surgical technician. She has 3 grown children and a granddaughter. She likes lots of foods so she couldn't pick just one - but she does know that she does NOT like sweet potatoes, no matter how they are fixed. When I asked her what she does in her spare time she said, "Since I coach and work here, I usually end up having to clean in my spare time." :( Interestingly Lisa and her husband enjoy riding motorcycles and as long as it is above 50 degrees they are probably out riding on the weekends - they are pictured on the Tail of the Dragon. Thank you for what you do Lisa!
Latin and Greek in Middle School This week in Kaylee's fifth grade language arts classes, students have been learning about Latin and Greek root words and prefixes about measurement in math and science. The roots we have been studying are metr/meter, which means measurement, and therm, which means heat. One of our vocabulary words this week was symmetrical, so we made a collage of symmetrical shapes by folding small pieces of paper in half and cutting out shapes that looked the same on both sides (colorful picture 2 created by Zoe Caines). We also reviewed these mathematical and scientific vocabulary words by playing Jeopardy, with the categories of: roots and prefixes, definitions synonyms, antonyms, and using a word correctly in a sentence. Students had a fun time collaborating and working together as a team to study their vocabulary words. Picture 1 is the winning team from Jeopardy: Jake Brown, Ward Sutlive, Ashton Hinmon, and Parker Borden in deep discussion before answering a question.
Celebrating the Presidents In honor of Presidents' Day, Carissa's class is working on research reports about past presidents of the United States. After reading about some of our past leaders, each student chose a president to write about - we have a variety including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Barack Obama. This week we researched using books and the computers, and wrote our rough drafts. Next week we will be typing up the final copies of our reports. Lower School is working really hard on our first research report of the year and are proud of ourselves.

Happy Chinese New Year This has been an exciting time for the Chinese program at MSA. We brought in the Chinese New Year with a trip to Atlanta's Chinatown. Students were able to use their language skills to order delicious traditional Chinese food, shop at a Chinese market, and experience a Chinese bakery at Sweet Hut. We are also getting ready for the Chinese National Test. Twelve students in Chinese 3 and 4 have signed up for the Level 1 and 2 tests that will be held at Emory University. Preparations for our 3rd annual China trip are underway as well. This year six students will be living and training at Shaolin Temple, the birthplace of Kung Fu. We couldn't be prouder of our students. 新年快乐! --Chas MacNeill, Chinese Instructor Upper School

Talking to Your Kids - with link In light of what has taken place this week in Florida our Counseling department found a wonderful article that gives parents some good information about talking with their kids and making them feel safe. The information is based on what mental health experts would say to their own children. Always know that, if for any reason, your student would like to speak with a counselor, our Counseling department is here to help. Please feel free to contact them yourself if you have concerns as well.
