Feature Teacher Meet Martha Muir! In her spare time she is very involved with the amateur radio community (W4MSA). In fact, she is presently serving as the Section Youth Coordinator for the state ham radio community - bet you didn't know that! Her favorite food would be strawberries ... chocolate covered. She received three different books for Christmas, but couldn't decide which to read first so she has been spending her time learning more about one of our HamJam speakers. Thank you for what you do every day Martha, we are glad you are here.

Winter Learning Italy/Greece Trip - 1 of 2 The Italy and Greece trip was filled with fantastic experiences. Among other things, we could enjoy beautiful views, magnificent art and architecture, and a wonderful combination of two very antique cultures. Personally, I believe the Italian highlight was to be able to see the restored Sistine Chapel just the way it looked when Michelangelo painted it. My Greece highlight would be the visit to the painteresque town of Nafplio. Pictured are the Vatican Museum (taken by Cayden Harris) and the Coliseum Amphitheater. --Jaime Gutierrez, Assistant Principal, Upper School

Again, your student does NOT have school on their conference days. Students are expected to wear uniforms to their scheduled conference.

Manipulating Math This week in 5th grade math, we have been learning about long division with remainders. To understand how this concept applies concretely, the students played a game that involved splitting blocks into equal groups and seeing how many were leftover. The students then had to work with their team to come up with a long division equation to represent their blocks mathematically. This allowed the students to draw connections between numerical division and math in real life, which was especially fun when they pretended that the blocks were cookies or money. This picture shows students Maggie Erlacher, Claire McAllister, Evan Sycks, and Joey Lenox tackling a division problem with blocks!

Winter Learning Italy/Greece Trip - 2 of 2 After looking forward to the trip for a year, and all the planning. It was a wonderful experience to share with our students. For me as a history teacher to see so many original structures and artifacts was amazing. We had multiple WOW! moments around every corner. Both Italy and Greece hold numerous treasured memories, including the shopping trip through Rome with my "travel buddies", and chief GPS navigator Mat Campbell, as well as finally seeing the intricate art throughout St. peter's Basilica. Meandering through the streets of picturesque Greek town of Nafplio, and seeing the Lion's Gate in corinth up close were truly memorable. (Left picture - Hanging around the Roman Forum. Introduction to Engineering is a Success This week and in Winter Learning, we started a class for students interested in engineering design. The students experimented with a CAD (computer-aided design) and will be using CAD to do further projects in class. We loved exploring how towers needed balance and how cantilevers needed support, even if only enough at the base. We loved seeing who could make a vessel and float the most pennies the longest with only some saran wrap and straws. We also learned that foil boats did not do as well in the water. In class, we look forward to physics and roller coaster building, designing a shed and chairs and even designing a shoe out of paper that we can walk a distance of ten feet. The kids are all super excited to have the class this semester and we look forward to offering this to our PreUpper students.
