Next Up: Fine Arts Creativity Week

Everyone keeps commenting on how this was the longest short week E.V.E.R.! Saturday was Beautification Day (pictured above are moms cleaning up the planters) and that seemed to go very well - lots of great photos on Facebook. Then we lost the first couple days due to the tropical storm - I hope everyone got through that alright. I hear there are still people without power, hopefully that will be rectified soon. We came in Wednesday ready to go with our first open house of the school year. Then Fine Arts held the induction ceremony of the Tri-M Society and they took a field trip to the theater - more about those two events below. Today was Mini Day for PU/CA/U! I hope you were able to attend that, it's always a fun time for parents. Next week we are looking forward to Fine Arts Creativity Week - we moved it so we didn't miss anything from the great line up of activities they have planned. Until then, I wish you a terrific and peaceful weekend - we will see you Monday!

Feature Teacher - Rerun

Meet Hayley Adams! She is a new math teacher in the Upper School this year. Before coming to MSA she ran her own tutoring business during and after college, where she helped students from middle school to college in math and physics. She believes "that the classroom is a place where students should feel comfortable enough to ask questions, where students learn about success and failure, and how to come back from failure, and where students aren't worried about how to pass the next test, but instead are focused on learning how to solve problems." She likes how friendly her co-workers are and that they are also dedicated to the success of the students. Outside of school she loves the out of doors, watching a good thunderstorm, and going storm chasing. Her dog, Cirrus, goes hiking and swimming with her. Favorite food? Stir fry! Currently she is reading Pat Conroy's book, "South of Broad." Here is something interesting! Hayley interned with the National Weather Service and actually issued an official severe thunderstorm warning. She is also certified to release weather balloons!

Welcome to Mill Springs!

Underwear for Harvey

Thanks to everyone who generously brought in packages of undies to send to the displaced people in the path of the hurricanes. Altogether, students and faculty brought in between 40 and 50 packages of undies for boys, girls, men, and women. Some were decorated with characters, some were lovely colors, some were simple and plain. I think everyone who receives these packages will be happy and grateful that our school thought of their special need in these unusual times.   Small schools can do great things!

Moms in Prayer Group to Form

Last spring I remember thinking "our school needs prayer!" Over the summer God kept pressing this on my heart so I am starting a Moms In Prayer group at MSA.  From their website:  Moms in Prayer International is a worldwide ministry devoted to covering every child and every school in prayer. Started in 1984 in Abbotsford, British Columbia, we are now headquartered in beautiful Poway, California and have prayer groups in over 140 countries. Moms in Prayer exists because one mom felt a burden to pray for her children with another mom … and we have grown into a global movement of prayer. A movement made of moms like you.

Moms In Prayer will meet in the conference room in the Administration building at 8:20 every Tuesday for 30 minutes. I will honor your time by starting and ending on time. Although I hope we have people show up week after week, I know everyone is busy, so there is no long-term commitment. Come when you can. Our first gathering got moved (because of weather) to September 19 and more details will be provided then, or you can check out their website before.

Gods word says where two or three are gathered together in His name, He will be there also (Matt 18:20). I know our school will benefit from the power of prayer. I hope you will join me.  Contact me with any questions Michelle Weyant  770-377-4222 or weyantfamily@me.com.

It's Time for the Annual Food Drive

Let's get together to feed those in need! Please join us as our small community partners with the Atlanta Community Food Bank in order to take a bite out of hunger in Metro Atlanta. We have big goals this year, so we hope you will participate (and maybe bug a neighbor or two), because many hands make light work and big differences!

September 5 - October 20, 2017

Please do NOT bring glass items or perishables. Check out the list of the MOST NEEDED ITEMS.

American Literature

It has been an exciting new school year in Erin's Communication Arts American Literature class! The students kicked off the semester by engaging in group discussions and activities about the summer reading, The Scarlett Letter. After learning about both the Puritan and Romantic literature tropes, the students concluded the unit by writing journals and decorating scarlet letters themselves.
During the current unit on the Rationalist literary period, the students studied the Declaration of Independence and translated it into modern-day language. Now the students are composing their own Declaration of Independence from a selected issue in their own lives. Students have been creative and unique in their choosing a topic, and their declarations span an emotional range from inspirational to hilarious. We can't wait to finish these works, get crafty to make them look straight out of 1776, and, in the style of the real Declaration of Independence, have the community sign each of them!

Journaling Hurricane

This week during Journal, the students wrote about their experience during Hurricane Irma, and the tropical storm that came through Atlanta. We practiced using describing words to help set the scene. We practiced correct punctuation and capitalization, and wrote a full paragraph about Monday's events. The two featured journal entries pictured above are from Ellie Guyton and Lexi Murphree. They both drew detailed pictures to accompany their writing!

Weekend Shirt - Get it While You Can!

This new t-shirt was created by our Parent Ambassador group for the sole purpose of getting the word out around town about Mill Springs Academy. That is why we call it our Weekend Shirt! The point is for everyone (parents, especially) to wear it on the weekend while you are running errands or out having fun. Someone may ask questions about the shirt or the logo, thus providing a terrific opportunity to share information about our wonderful school with the community, and that means the shirt is doing its job! Let's show our school pride all around town.
These shirts were given to all of our new students at orientation. But there are more and they are available to you for $14 each! All you have to do is go to the website, order yours today, then WEAR it and TALK about it! p.s. This is NOT approved as a uniform item but it is a great shirt to wear to the Dyslexia Dash!

Cursive isn't Gone yet!

We had a short, but busy week in Language Arts. First, we took a test on vocabulary and grammar. Specifically, we have been studying adjectives and nouns. Then, we began our unit on handwriting. We started to learn how to write in cursive. It is evident that the students loved creating their own signatures in cursive. Pictured is Seth Horwitz showing off his autograph. Next week you can catch us continuing to learn cursive amongst verbs and persuasive writing.

Rialto Theater Visit

The Fine Arts department went on a field trip on Thursday to see Hunchback of Notre Dame at the Rialto Theater in Atlanta. The production was an adaptation of the Disney movie of the same name. It was, however; not the typical Disney fare. The musical explores themes of hatred, obsession, and redemption. It sparked a great deal of awesome discussion afterwards. Thirty- six students (pictured) were in attendance, along with fine arts staff. It was a great day at the theater.

Do you need a Phone Number?

All you have to do is go to the school directory on the website - www.millsprings.org/directory - and look someone up. You can look them up by first name, last name, even school if that is all you know, enter it into the keyword search field. If you are unsure of a spelling, the first few letters of either first or last name will give you some options as well.

See beautiful Carissa to the left. If you click on the envelope in her listing, it will allow you to email her. The phone number is her direct dial number, which will ring directly in her class room. The extension is used if you call the school's main number, then you can enter her extension and be transferred to her classroom. You can even click on View Profile and it will give you more detail about Carissa, like what classes she is teaching. The directory on the website is a wealth of information all available at your fingertips. Check it out.
