Reflection

Since our last newsletter, we have held Baccalaureate, Graduation, the final board meeting of the school year, exam review days for PU/CA/U, the Performing Arts Showcase, a Band Party, and the last day of KK's Club for the school year. Today we have had Spring Fling (I overheard chanting ...War..ren, War..ren, War...ren) in the Middle School and Lower held it's end of the year party. Oh and Final Exams have begun. I hope everyone is studying well, good Luck to all of you.

This is a wonderful time for reflection - what did we do that was good, not so good, terrible, how could we have done better, you know that kind of thing. Students you know what grades you received, could you have done better? How will you do better next year. Parents/Grandparents the time has gone so fast, what did we do with it and what could we have done? Even here on campus we review the past, not to dwell on the bad things, but to focus on the good things and ways to make the not so good things even better. We are already beginning to think about the next school year and it isn't even yet summer. Before it gets away from you, take a little time to reflect on life.
There is only one more week of school - have a great weekend!

Art of the Week

This week's Art of the Week is a beautiful painting by PreUpper student Caroline Skinner. She painted a replication of a work of art by Vincent Van Gogh. She did a fantastic job capturing his use of color. Great job Caroline!

Dear Mill Springs Community:

We had a great school year!  Thanks to each and every one of you for your support and willingness to help out in so many different ways throughout the school year.  Together, we have accomplished a lot and I am most proud of all the strides our students have made this year!

Looking towards the next upcoming school year 2017 - 2018, there will be a few program changes that are critical to the continuing success of the Mill Springs school community.  After serving for the past 16 years as the Principal of the Middle School, I will be moving into the Co-Director of Admissions position.  This will allow me to ensure that the many great features of our wonderful school are better known to the community, as I will also be participating in Community Outreach. I am very excited about this new opportunity as I will be able to leverage a lot of my past experience in Admissions to help guide a new and exciting program for Mill Springs.  READ MORE

Muffins for Moms

Lower School students celebrated Mother's Day with our annual Muffins for Moms breakfast. Everyone enjoyed dining together in our beautiful great room overlooking the campus. It is always a great opportunity for the moms to catch u with each other and meet their child's friends. The students worked all week on gifts. Moms were given an assortment of handmade gifts from jewelry boxes and bracelets to flower pots and letters. We always enjoy having our wonderful Lower School moms come and share in this heart warming event. Pictured is Evan Eisenstat and his mom, Ashli Breen.

Sarafina and the Black Cloak

Mrs. Courtney's PreUpper Literature class has enjoyed the historical fiction novel of Serafina and the Black Cloak. The novel is full of suspense, mystery, twist and turns, intertwining plots and fun reveals. This book is written using the Biltmore and Asheville as the place in history and the kids are all excited about the possibility of traveling there one day. We will be reading this book next year in 7th grade. Rising 7th grade students, look forward to a fun novel next year. For you rising 8th graders, read the 2nd book in the series: Serafina and the Twisted Staff. Enjoy your summer.

Geometry Careers

We had a very productive and busy week in my Math class.  First, we closed our unit on Fractions by cooking.  We made Pizza in groups and each group had to solve fraction problems to see how much of each ingredient they needed.   Next, we wired our robots as part of our STEM unit.  Our Robots will be finished just in time for our summer break.  How exciting!  Lastly, we began our mini unit on Geometry.  I had each student research a different career that had to do with Geometry.  After researching, they were to write a paragraph explaining the duties in the career that they chose and how it connects to Geometry.  Overall, I want nothing more than my kids to understand how Math applies to their everyday lives.  Pictured Noah Velasco (grade 5) working on his robot and wiring it.

Social Studies in the Upper School

This month in the Social Studies department we have been busy. In World History before finals there was a research paper that was due. The students showed what they have learned in English class as well as World History, this project was a great collaboration between the two departments. In American History they debated should the United States have dropped the Atomic Bomb. In Civics we had a paper that was due on different topics on Government. This past week we have all studied for our finals.

Fine Arts Showcase

The Fine Arts Showcase was this past week in the PVA Amphitheater and showcased our 5th - 12th grade drama and music students.  Included in the evening were anything from group numbers from recent Broadway musicals and operatic solos to original skits and 80's music.  How can you not have a good time, out in the amphitheater, at the end of the school year, getting down to "Take On Me?"  Pictured are some of our performers (Cameron Carr, Nick Tate, Collins Losson, Audrey Henderson, Addison Monette) and recent MSA Graduate Michael Antonucci, enjoying the evening.

SENIORS: Keep Up With Friends

You are DONE with your high school career and are now an ALUMNI! How awesome! I bet you thought it would never get here.
There are a couple things you need to know about being an Alumni of the Class of 2017:
  • First, you can still keep up wit your friends through MUSTANG (yes, the place where you have gone to get homework).
  • Second, you can still get the MSA Weekly News sent to you.
In order for those two things to happen, you must send me your personal email - not your MSA millsprings.org email because that goes away soon - but your personal email address. Just CLICK HERE and send me that info and I will take care of the rest.
RIGHT NOW you have access to the Alumni Portal in MUSTANG - but when school gets out that access will go away if you don't send me your personal email. So do it today, RIGHT NOW while you are thinking about it. They you can use your current password to access MUSTANG after you graduate to keep up with your friends.
