MSA Weekly News

Overheard on the Sidewalk

This week I sat outside at the picnic table to enjoy the sunshine for a little bit. The kids were being escorted from PE class back to Lower School. I heard a little one say, "Bye KK, I love you." That student was talking to a teacher! Did you ever in your life tell a teacher you loved them? I don't think I ever had a teacher I loved. How wonderful.

You may have noticed that the MSA Weekly News has taken on a new look. And if you did, you were right! With the introduction of our new website, we have some pretty nifty new tools as well. One of them is the News Manager and this beautiful template. The News Manager allows me to share articles here in the MSA Weekly News with you, yet also post them to the website and into another new tool called a Learning Management System (LMS). You will hear more about the LMS a little later in the year. But for now, I am excited to share the new and improved MSA Weekly News with you. Have a great weekend and I hope to see you at the Polo Party!

All Hands on Deck

In a hard fought contest, the Mustangs remained undefeated with a physical 5-2 victory over AASD.  "Every time you play them it's like hugging a cactus.  The closer you get to your destination it's going to be tough; and to overcome adversity, you have be prepared, focus on your job, stay calm, make good decisions, and battle through it." Within the first ten seconds of the game, the Mustangs quick strike offense went to work as Eric Siegel's perfectly placed corner kick found the back of the net which propelled the Mustangs to a 1-0 lead.  "Eric has a nice feel for what we are trying to accomplish with our corner kicks and that play has turned into a major league scoring option for us."  The Mustang Offense was not satisfied with one goal; and behind Siegel's two additional scores, built a 3-0 lead.  "When the situation presents itself, you must capitalize and finish plays.  Coach Mike Smith has done a great job of implementing a sense of urgency to produce."   Read More

 Art in the Community

Lower School's 4th grade artists have their bold, colorful, fantastic artwork on display at DaVinci's Donuts in Alpharetta. Ms. Shannon and Ms. Jodi's students created animal faces with plaster and paint. They also painted environmental masterpieces on canvas. We attached the animal faces to the canvases to create mixed media works. AWESOME! Come see their work in downtown Alpharetta.

 1st Grade Science Class

The first graders in Lower School have been learning about plants in science class. They learned about the parts of a plant. Then, they made their own sunflowers (with real sunflower seeds) and labeled the plant parts. In honor of Johnny Appleseed, the class learned about the life cycle of an apple tree. The students made their own apple trees and sequenced the stages of an apple tree on the trunk. The students have enjoyed learning about plants.

 JTF Preparation Begins

Students from grades 5 through 11 are currently working hard in preparation for their Junior Theatre Festival (JTF) performance in Atlanta in January. Eleven students are perfecting selections from a musical to present for Broadway adjudicators for feedback! After their performance, students will take workshops with Broadway choreographers and directors and participate in events with over 4,000 other students in musical theatre programs from across the country. This will be MSA's fifth year attending JTF.

Pictured: Students in the JTF cast are working on team building skills. Here they are in the midst of untangling themselves from a "human knot".

Public Open House

Mill Springs Academy is holding an Open House!

                               Wednesday, October 8

                                         9:00am

                              Student Activity Center

Did you know that Word of Mouth is by far the largest way families find their way to a Public Open House at Mill Springs Academy? So if you know someone with a child that might benefit from attending MSA, please invite them to our Open House or better yet bring them. If you haven’t attended one, an Open House provides potential parents with an overview of the school, a Fine Arts presentation, a parent perspective and a student perspective, a tour of the school and a chance to speak with the principal. It’s a great opportunity for them to get a feel for what we are all about.

                         THANK YOU for sharing MSA!

 Middle Schooler Volunteers

Ben Shlanta (pictured), who is a Level L student in the Middle School has been earning volunteer service hours by working at the Atlanta Community Food Bank. The ACFB is the organization that benefits from our large, all-school food drive that we conduct annually during the month of November.

Author to Visit

On Wednesday, October 1st, author, illustrator, and musician Chris Rumble will be visiting our Lower and Middle School students for a Reading Pep Rally! The program will begin at 10:10am in the MSA gym. We are very excited to hear his inspirational story, and we can't wait to show him our awesome school. If you are interested in purchasing any of Mr. Rumble's books, watch for the order form that has been sent home and turn it in to Ms. Brittany in the library. He will even sign the books!

Happy Reading!

Number Sense

Jackson Wickley, Middle School

Guest Journalist

I took a test on Number Sense. I have learned how to place decimals in numbers. I used the correct vocabulary like estimate, great and less than and rounding. I learned that a decimal in front of a number is like a fraction.

.17 = 17/100.

ConnectAbility

Congratulations to MSA Senior Andrew Walker, who was the National Anthem soloist for the 4th Annual ConnectAbility 5k/10k Run/Walk in Dahlonega on September 13th. He sang a beautiful national anthem to motivate the hundreds of runners before their run. The ConnectAbility race was started and is chaired by MSA Music and Drama Teacher Kate McElliott to raise money for ConnectAbility, which provides special needs programming in North Georgia for adults and children. Every year, MSA students and/or staff have come out to support it, usually by running. Last year, JV Cross Country Coach Kelli King won the 10k for Women. Thank you, MSA family, for your community support!
