Only 6 More Weeks of School

This week we returned to campus after a wonderful week off to find the roadwork has been finished and the roundabout in action. We have had a well attended Open House and Teacher Appreciation Day with a terrific luncheon sponsored by the PVA. We truly enjoyed the wonderful meal which even included a take along snack of caramel corn (in many different flavors, I might add)! Once we return from Spring Break, the rest of the school year just zips by us. We only have 6 more weeks of school (Wait!?! What???). Prom is this weekend, a few weekends after that is graduation and before you know it Honors Day will be here. Get ready because once that whirlwind gets started, there's no stopping it!

Make sure you check out all of this weeks news, there are some really great things going on around here. Hope your Spring Break was awesome.

Art of the Week

Lower School student Jack Jenkins shows off his pencil drawing of the new Lower/Middle School building.

        Judith & Frank Slaymaker

A huge St. Paddy's Day thank you to Judith and Frank Slaymaker, parents of Steven Slaymaker (10th grade), who graced the Communication Arts staff with the best Irish Soda Bread ever! "It was a very large loaf," said teacher Sam Adams, "and we decimated it by the end of lunch!"

Kay Morrison, Principal - Communication Arts School

Musician of the Week

Meet 9th grade Upper School student Vijay Shah! Vijay enjoys sports, art, and playing the trumpet. We really enjoy the energy that he brings to Band, and we find him to be absolutely fantastic! That's why he is our Musician of the Week! Keep up the good work, Vijay!

Late Bus Route Change

Please make a note, due to ongoing construction of the city center of Sandy Springs an intersection on the late bus route is going to be closed beginning next Monday April 18.  The concern is that the route around the construction will take a long time, so a change is being made to the last stop of the late bus route.  You can find more detailed information HERE.

Spring Break Scrapbook

Well from our survey a couple weeks ago we know we went everywhere for Spring Break. Here is our Spring Break Scrapbook with the pictures I received after we all returned. So left to right and top to bottom here is what I received:

  1. Sammy Lesser (in the middle) had a relaxing staycation with his friends and family.
  2. Alex Yager hiked to the top of Chimney Rock in Bat Cave, NC - this has an altitude of 2880 ft.
  3. Sammy also went horseback riding.
  4. I visited Graceland in Memphis, Tennessee.
  5. Elmo went to Beech Bend Raceway in Kentucky.

I also know that Reese Bentley went to Amelia Island in Florida (from Instagram). I hope everyone had a terrific break - thank you for sharing your locations and pictures with us.

We Thank YOU!

The Lower School and Middle School students stood across the street from the construction crew while holding up THANK YOU and GRACIAS signs to acknowledge all the time and effort put toward the new building! The students are so thankful and proud of their new gorgeous building! The construction crew was on the sidewalk having a luncheon and were very appreciative of the gesture, they gave a round of applause back to the kids.

Chick-fil-A Team Needs YOU!

PVA’s Chick-fil-A team needs a co-chair for next year to make sure MSA’s hungry continue to be fed each Monday! Duties include:

1) Make sure a coordinator is assigned for each school (Lower/Middle, PreUpper, and Upper/CommArts) to take care of supplies and scheduling volunteers to distribute lunch each Monday.

2) Be present on Orientation Day to explain the program to new families and take orders.

3) Interface with the PVA regarding progress on the program and answer any questions from new families as they come into the MSA community.

It’s a great way to get to know the students and staff at Mill Springs, and does NOT require you to be present each Monday.  Chick-fil-A is a favorite program for students, and parents love not worrying about lunch on Mondays. Questions?  Please call Cathy Abram at 770-712-1117 or email at abramfamily@comcast.net

Honors Day

Pet Partners

PreUpper 7th grader George Klein, and his dog, Cookie (pictured), have recently passed all their tests to become a nationally registered animal therapy team with Pet Partners. Pet lovers inherently understand the bond that exists between people and their animals. We enjoy the unconditional love that they provide every day. Pet Partners has registered nearly 50,000 therapy animal teams that they have trained to lovingly share the healing power of pets with people in need. Teams visit with a variety of people including veterans, seniors living with Alzheimer’s, patients in recovery, students facing literacy challenges, people with intellectual or physical disabilities, and those approaching the end of life. George and Cookie have already participated in a festival and visited a Senior Living Center.  Next week they will go to GSU to help the students lower their stress during finals. What an awesome accomplishment – congratulations George and Cookie!

What's the Matter?

Is it a solid or a liquid? This question stumped some students in Lower School this week. Group 3 conducted an experiment to illustrate the different states of matter. Each student made their own batch of oobleck using cornstarch and water. Why were the students not able to decide whether oobleck is a solid or a liquid, you might ask. Well, you can squeeze it into a ball, which is obviously a solid. However, oobleck flows through your fingers and you can pour it, which are the properties of a liquid. Do you see why they were so confused? Oobleck is both a solid and a liquid! Everyone loved this fun, yet messy experiment. You can make your own oobleck at home by mixing a cup of cornstarch with half a cup of water. Then, you can decide if it’s a solid or a liquid. Pictured: Holly Stormont with the oobleck running through her hands.

Just a Reminder

Things seem to be going well with the opening of the new roundabout. But here are a couple things we'd like to share now that we have a week of it under our belts.

  • Please slow down - the speed limit on campus is not currently marked, but it is 15 mph.
  • It is imperative that you follow the directional arrows painted on the road.
  • Please don't run over the Traffic Coordinator. We like Cindy.

We only have a little while longer to manage around the construction traffic and we appreciate your patience through the course of this year.

Don't Miss Out!

You can sign up NOW for any of our Summer Programs.
