Teaching Philosophy
Give students the power! Magnify their strengths, put them in charge ... with structure, humor and creativity! I create materials that specifically allow for student ideas and revisions. All lessons are broken into sequential steps featuring clarity, appealing challenges, word economy, attractive design, a clear plan, and crafty use of white space. My senior lit class is based on a college model with multiple college texts, set-in-stone syllabi and deadlines, peer study groups, peer feedback, mandatory agendas to manage all of life's elements, and two major research projects - one resulting in a 10 page research paper, and the other - a 10-15 minute research presentation to an audience of 200. My materials are very flexible, built on best practices, and they rely on real world applications, including problem-solving, clear organization, and teamwork. Most of all... they are challenging, with a managable plan for success. My money-back guarantee: I do not produce, nor will I ever require, what students call "busy-work." People ask, "What is the best way to engage ADD kids?" After fifteen years I respond, "Don't make work easier ...make it more interesting and more challenging, with room for student ideas and brilliance...and plenty of technology." What works well with the ADD population is magic with all learners, including the intellectually and creatively gifted. It is my great joy to work with the challenging, dynamic multi-taskers we call "teenage ADD students." They are truly the leaders and business executives of tomorrow. Oh, and one more important element...have a little fun!
