More than Just a Dream!

Some of us have had a short week, some of us have had a full week. Whatever kind of week you have had, I hope it was good. The week started with a board meeting, then we have had Valentine's Day parties across campus, there was a College Coffee and we treated the new teachers to lunch, we hosted a GAPSEC (Georgia Association of Private Schools for Exceptional Children) meeting and then there were conferences for the 7-12th graders.

The picture above came from Monday when we assembled the entire school at the Amphitheater. It was interesting to see how many actually fit, from this angle it looks full. BUT if this were a sideline shot, you would have seen that we could have individuals sit on the grass at each level of seating as well. This is a great space to gather for any 'all school' type meetings! Thank you to everyone that participated in any PVA fundraiser over the last few years - your donations helped make the Amphitheater become more than just a dream!

We have a holiday on Monday and so enjoy your long weekend! See you Tuesday.

Garon Allen is a grandparent in Communication Arts. He takes time to bring us surprise lunch often. Not only is his food amazing, but he takes all of our allergies into consideration. He truly makes all the teachers in CommArts smile through his gift of time and food. Thank you!

The Sounds of Radio Waves

This week, the halls of the PreUpper School were alive with the sounds of radio waves. PreUpper students, led by licensed students such as Ben Groff KN4ANB and James Maichle KM4QHQ participated in the spring School Club Roundup. The School Club Roundup is a nationwide contest among schools that have an Amateur Radio Station. During this week, everyone tries to make as many contacts as possible. Members of the North Fulton Amateur Radio League, such as Garry Brass, seen in this photo, come in to guide and assist the students make their contacts and follow proper procedures.

Various teachers brought their students down to the station we set up out in the hall for an opportunity to 'call CQ,' which is to say, 'Is there anyone out there? Hello, can we talk?' Despite our shortened school week, students managed to more than double the number of contacts we made during last fall's School Club Roundup.  READ MORE

Lower Celebrates Valentine's Day

Lower School celebrated Valentine's Day this Tuesday with passing out valentines in the morning to each students individually decorated box or bag. In the afternoon, we had a wonderful party. The students watched the movie "A Charlie Brown Valentine", and made snow globes. They were able to decorate their own valentine cookie. It was a great party! Thank you to Marianne Borden and Laura Bear for organizing the party, and thank you to all of the parents who volunteered to come in and help!  You are the best!

Middle School on the Court

The curtain has closed on the Middle School and JV Basketball teams this winter season. Both teams impressed coaches Courtney Downs and LaToyia Armstead with their tenacity and determination throughout the season. The JV team may have been the shorter players on the court, but they learned how to play big and play strong. They had a positive attitude in every game they played and by the end of the season were force to be reckoned on the court. The Middle School team came away with one win this season, but it was by far the most exciting win ever (in Coach Courtney's opinion). CHECK OUT THIS VIDEO of the final seconds of the game. Any screaming you hear is from Coach LaToyia; the person who runs crazy into the frame at the end is Coach Courtney! (Thank you to the Burroway family for the video.)

Wavy Physics

Guest Journalist - Sam Mishkin, Junior,  Upper School

In Vaidehi Rallapalli's 3rd period Physics class, we have had an extravaganza of learning experiences all concerning the topic of wave motions and properties. Last week, we partook in a lab experiment to learn how mass, string length, and amplitude (also known as the height of the wave) can affect the frequency and time period for a wave. At the end of the experiment, there was a mind-boggling challenge to try to sustain a wave for 40 seconds by manipulating mass, string length, and applying all of our knowledge to make the experiment a success.

This week was probably the pinnacle of this semester so far in physics. We had our first major project to work on in Physics: we had to make a wave pendulum (also known as a SIMS Pendulum) to effectively visualize the patterns of waves and how different oscillations (or rotation speeds) can affect the shape of the graph. Everyone turned in a project, and everyone did an amazing job. READ MORE

Parent Ambassador Program

This past weekend, February 9th-11th, Mill Springs Academy's International Thespian troupe 8170 attended the annual Thespian Conference in Columbus, GA. We had so much fun learning about and watching live theater. The conference was attended by over 5,000 students from troupes from all over Georgia. We attended many workshops from how to wear and care for wigs to how to market shows to your community. Our students attended several improvisational theater workshops. You should ask Jack Hurtsellers about the "Improving a Musical" workshop he attended. We saw a total of 5 musicals and one play. All very different and very well done. I know we are all excited about our own musical Singin' in the Rain coming up in April. Please come up the hill and get involved in the arts. We would love to see you!
