Indian Summer Continues

This has been a week filled with activity. ACT testing has begun, there was a social media parent workshop, staff/faculty got flu shots, the dance workshop continued, and Fathers' Night with Robert was held last night. Then today we watched the One Act Play that was taken to competition and it was Booster Pizza/Krispy Kreme Friday. There were a couple field trips as well with Lower School going to a pumpkin patch and CommArts to Georgia Tech to see the Papermaking museum.
In between all of this good stuff we have had some sadness, one of our PreUpper students lost their father this week. While I can say nothing that will ease the pain of their sudden and unexpected loss, It becomes a time for reflection for all. A look at the love we have in our lives and the ones that mean the most to us. Hold each other close, knowing that our time is precious. My thoughts and prayers are with this family and those close to them. Have a wonderful weekend as our Indian Summer goes on  - I could get used to the weather we have had.

Art of the Week

This week our Middle School art students worked hard on a group sculpture for the upcoming Communication Arts Greece Festival - a Trojan Horse. Come check out their finished piece at the festival on November 30th. Some of the art students are pictured: Andrew Smith, Zach Weiss, Zach Burns, Ryan Zant, and Presley Hellriegel.

Thank you Deidre Fisher

Thank you to Deidre Fisher, mother of PU student Michael, for generously volunteering to re-pot the big green planters in the front of the PreUpper School. Thank you for noticing that our planters had suffered due to the drought and desperately needed attention. Because of your kindness, we now have gorgeous planters full of living plants!! We promise to water every day!

A Title Run

During the third week in October when the leaves begin to fall, you can bet that your Mustangs will be running towards another AAC Tournament Soccer Title. In the opening game of the 2016 AAC Tournament, the Mustangs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead over AASD when Senior Evan Smith converted off a corner kick play from Kyle Moffitt. "We have been working on that all year, and it was nice to see our guys finish plays. Kyle put the ball on a tee, and Evan went and got it." Leading 1-0, the Mustangs' Tyler Harrell converted an offensive run and gave MSA a 2-0 advantage at halftime. "Tyler is a match up nightmare, and he does a great job of stretching the defense. Being up two was a good start, but we left three-point blank scores on the table. READ MORE

Fingerprint Lab - 1 of 2

Guest Journalist - Julian Lopez, 6th Grade, Middle School

We used the scientific method in our Science class to determine the predominate fingerprint type for the students in our class.

Observation: We started by looking at the three types of fingerprints; loops, arches and whorls.

Problem: We wanted to know how many of each fingerprints of each kind we had.

Hypothesis: We guessed that the most common fingerprint in our class would be loop because it is the most common in the world.

Experiment: We put graphite on a note card, pressed our fingers on it and pressed our fingers on tape. Our fingerprints were left on tape se we could identify them.

Analysis:  Most people had loops as their most common fingerprint. I guessed that loops were the most common in the class.

Conclusion: We tallied up each type of fingerprint and Loops had the most.

I learned the most common type of fingerprint is the loop. They are the most common in the world. They were the most common in our classroom. And they were my most common fingerprint as well. (Pictured Julian standing next to Michael Mendoza)

XC Season Wrap Up

Please congratulate Sam Lynch for finishing 2nd place in the Cross Country GISA Region meet at Loganville Christian Academy last week. Sam has qualified to run in the GISA State meet this Saturday 10/29 at Augusta Prep. This run is bitter sweet as Sam is gearing up to set another personal record in what will be his final Cross Country race as a Mustang. Wish him luck!

Please also congratulate the 2016 Mustangs Cross Country team, which battled through many challenges this season, including facing greater completion having moved from AA to AAA in the GISA conference. This team comprised of many young runners and new runners never ceased to amaze us with their tenacity and spirit. We could not be more proud as coaches and we are excited to continue working with these athletes and watching them to break through barriers.  READ MORE

Public Open House

Wednesday, November 9

9:00 - 11:00am

Student Activity Center

If you know someone that might benefit from attending MSA, please invite them to an Open House or better yet bring them! In case you haven't attended an Open House, it provides prospective parents with an overview of the school, a wonderful Fine Arts presentation, at least one parent and one student perspective, a tour of the school and an opportunity to speak with the principal. It's a great opportunity for them to get a feel for what we are all about. Word of mouth is by far the biggest way families find their way to Mill Springs and we know that you sometimes have the chance to be "Mill Springs on the Street", we thank you for sharing MSA!

Whoever Gets the Most Points Wins

Guest Journalist - Camryn Padgett, 5th grade, Middle School
Being in Ms. Kaylee's math class is lots of fun. We get to do Kahoots a lot. Kahoot! is an online quiz where the teacher has the questions on her computer and the options for the answer and such while the students' computers show buttons that correspond with the answers on the teacher's computer. The students then choose an answer by clicking one of the buttons and it shows a loading screen. When everyone answers, it shows a scoreboard on the teacher's computer and how many points you have as well as your place on the students' computers.

Whoever gets the most points wins. In our class, if you win you get a piece of candy or a bouncy ball. I love Ms. Kaylee's math class!

Hayride and Corn Maze!
This week in Lower School, we took a field trip to Big Springs Farm in Woodstock. The students had a blast! We had the chance to pet some farm animals, make butter, paint, and take a hayride. We even made it out of the corn maze after some twists and turns!

"The best part about the field trip was the hayride and walking through the corn maze. The corn maze was great because we got lost a few times!" –Ward Sutlive

The farmer read us a story called "Too Many Pumpkins." Overall, we had a great time at Big Springs Farm and we will hopefully be back soon!

Vision Supersedes Circumstance

The Mustangs quest for a fourth consecutive AAC Tournament Soccer Championship fell short with a 2-0 loss to the Cottage School. Down 1-0 at halftime, the Mustangs looked to reverse their fortunes; but unfortunately were never able to find their stride. "You have to give the Cottage School a great deal of credit, and Cougars were the best team on the field today. Granted we are disappointed with the outcome, but our foundation is solid and our future is bright. We have to remember how hard we worked to avoid feeling this bad and vow never to go down that road again. We can either experience the pain of discipline or the pain of disappointment, and you can have no great Victory in life unless you can overcome adversity. All in all, we had another great year. We improved every day, led the AAC wire to wire, played in our sixth AAC Tournament Final in the last nine years, and won our third consecutive AAC Regular Season Championship. This Team is a gift from God, and I love and appreciate my staff and players. READ MORE

ADHD Awareness Month

It's time to celebrate the gift and manage the challenges of ADHD. If you would like to learn more about ADHD please check out www.adhdawarenessmonth.org.

The last ADHD tidbit that we wanted to share with you, for Awareness month, is from the CHADD website

"ADHD is a very real neuro-developmental disorder that affects people of every age, gender, IQ, religion and socioeconomic background," says David W. Goodman, MD, FAPA, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and a member of CHADD's Board of Directors. "It's characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity that interferes with daily functioning and life's achievements, and can have potentially devastating consequences when not properly identified, diagnosed and treated."

Following are some of the most common myths about ADHD and the facts debunking those myths.

Myth #1: ADHD is an American disorder that results from our hyper-fast lifestyle.
Fact: ADHD is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a neuro-developmental disorder of international proportions, with scientific research conducted on every continent.   READ MORE
