TECHNOLOGY HONOR POLICY
The students, faculty, administration and parents of Mill Springs
Academy agree to abide by the following Technology Honor Policy, which sets
forth the accepted use of computers both in and away from school. The student
deserves to be given flexibility and respect in using computer technology as a
learning tool. However, flexibility should not allow the use of technology to
infringe on others’ privacy, nor allow access to inappropriate information.
VIOLATIONS OF THE MSA HONOR POLICY ARE A
SERIOUS BREACH OF TRUST AND WILL BE HANDLED BY THE STUDENTS’ HONOR COUNCIL AND
THE PRESIDENT.
1.
SECURITY
a)
If passwords are used to protect computer files,
the student agrees to provide any appropriate MSA staff with the passwords for
accessing any files.
b)
No attempt will be made to access secure
information.
c)
The responsibility for securing and maintaining
your notebook rests solely with YOU.
2.
USE OF THE INTERNET
a)
The Internet should be used for scholarly research
and as a means of obtaining information for school assignments.
b)
No effort shall be made to circumvent the school
firewall and content filtering software.
c)
He/she will NOT seek, use, download or store
inappropriate information (pornographic, vulgar, gambling, militant/extremist,
etc.).
d)
He/she will not download non-school related music
or Video files through the school network.
e)
He/she will not use electronic media devices ( e.g.
iPods) while in school..
f)
IM (instant messaging) or chat rooms will NOT
be used during school hours without instructor’s permission.
g)
She/he will NEVER give out
information in a chat room that could identify either the student or the school.
h)
Information obtained from the Internet for research
purposes MUST be properly documented with Web address, date site was
visited and author of information.
i)
Anti-Plagiarism software will be used to monitor
originality of work.
3.
E-MAIL
a)
E-mail is to be used for only appropriate
communication (to communicate in a manner similar to face to face communication
and in a way that would be acceptable if said in front of a teacher or parent).
b)
E-mail should be treated as confidential. Do not
read, forward, or use someone else’s e-mail.
c)
E-mail during school hours is for school related
communication only.
4.
GAMES
a)
Educational games can be played only with
instructor’s permission.
b)
All other games will be played only with
instructor permission and only during breaks..
5.
TRADING DISKS AND SWAPPING PROGRAMS
a)
Is illegal, inappropriate, and can be harmful to
the operating system of the laptop.
b)
Copyright laws protect most files/programs from
being shared. Copyright questions should be referred to the Technology
Director.
As a student enrolled at Mill
