·         Land ownership- the trustee’s wanted to prevent the development of a rich upper class. Each male who came by charity received a town lot for a house plus 50 acres of land. A person who paid their way there received- 50 acres, 50 acres for each servant they brought (up to 500 acres).  Sometimes the land was bad for agriculture and they would not reissue land. Inheritance Land could only be passed on to a male heir. Ban on slavery it was allowed in every other colony.  Prohibition on rum and other liquors ignored very often.

 

·         _________________- Ga’s first ambassador- Native American chief- commanded the Yamacraw tribe (tribe that was banished by the Creeks).  He assisted James in acquiring land form other tribes, and helped him in England in 1734 to ask King ______________for assistance. ___________________died in 1739. His nephew Tooanahowi, served with James at the Battle of ____________________ in 1742.

 

·         1734 trip to England- Now Georgia was to become a ______________ against the French and Spanish. Parliament agreed to give money to build forts.  More colonists came back with James and Tomochichi, 500 people.  First fort in Georgia ____________________________- St. Simon’s island.

 

·         War with Spain- In 1736 James went back to England to ask for more money because the tensions with Britain and Spain were increasing. Without British support the colony would fail.

 

·         In 1739 Britain declared war on ______________- James wanted to capture the Spanish fort of _________________________ but was outnumbered and fled back to Fort Frederica.

 

·         In 1742- The Spanish tried to invade Fort Frederica but failed by land and sea. Georgia was saved, by the brilliant leading of James Oglethorpe.

 

·         He left Georgia in 1743 and never came back.  After he left- many colonists left so export business was poor, crop failures. Gradually, the land ownership and inheritance was less strict. In 1750 they dropped the ban on slavery, and control was given back to England as a royal colony.

 

·         Royal colony of Georgia-  1st royal governor John Reynolds- not very popular or effective so replaced within 2 years. 1758- __________________ church was the official church of Georgia. It was divided into _____ religious districts (parishes).  3rd governor Sir __________________- served for 20+ years.

 

·         French and Indian War Indians fought with the French- Americans fought with British. Eventually, Spain joined France as an ally.  In 1763- Treaty of _________was signed. Result- France gave up claims to Canada and all territory east of the ___________________ River -except New Orleans). Spain lost Florida. Britain gave up all claims west of the Mississippi River which established Georgia’s western boundary.

 

·         Proclamation of 1763- Created 4 new colonies- Quebec (Canada), Grenada (Caribbean), East and West Florida. Georgia’s border was extended to the _____________________ river. 

 

·         Georgia prospered after the French and Indian War because Spain and France were no longer a threat. Creeks left and there was more land to work with. _______________ system was developed for land ownership. The head of each family was given 100 acres plus 50 acres for each member of the family.  FREE LAND!!!! Massive influx of people.

 

·         1766- Georgia had 10, 000 whites, 8,000 blacks (10 years later 50, 000 colonists).
