Communication Arts School and Upper School
Curriculum requirements: Grades 9 through 12
A college preparatory curriculum:
Students attending MSA, ninth through twelfth grades, must earn 26 Carnegie Units to graduate. Mill Springs Academy uses the semester system. Each class earns 0.5 Carnegie Unit credit per semester. One (1.0) Carnegie Unit is equivalent to 15 credit hours. Students also earn credits in elective courses.
English – 4 units: World Literature, American Literature, British Literature, Senior English
Social Studies: - 3 units: World History, American History, Political Science/Economics. Holocaust studies is a one-semester elective which is not required.
Mathematics: - 4 units: Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, or Applied Math
Foreign Language – 2 units: Spanish I, II (Spanish III is also offered). The language requirement may be waived for students who have a language-based learning disability. Two years of a language are not a requirement for entrance into community colleges, tech schools, two year colleges, and many four-year colleges.
Science – 4 units: Biology, Chemistry, Ecology, Anatomy and Physiology, or Physics.
Physical Education: - 1 unit
Grades 7 & 8: Communication Arts and Pre-Upper Schools
Language Arts: Language Lit 7 & Language Lit 8
Social Sciences: Social Studies (1st semester 7th );Ga. History (2nd semester 7th)
World Cultures ( 1st semester 8th)Georgia History (2nd semester 8th)
Science: Life Science (7) & Physical Science (8)
Math: General Math; Pre-algebra; Algebra I for advanced math students.
Physical Education: One unit in required in either 7th or 8th grade
