Campaign Goal:

$2,550,000

Permanent PreUpper School - $2,080,000

Students in Mill Springs Pre Upper program are scattered across the campus due to the lack of permanent facilities.  As projections for the program show continued growth, it is imperative that we construct a permanent classroom facility, allowing the school to accommodate approximately 100 students in the Pre Upper program.  The new facility will contain eight classrooms, three labs, a conference room, faculty workroom and offices, and a great room for 120 people.

Athletic Fields - $475,000

Competitive and instructional sports are proven to be an important tool in enhancing a student’s self-esteem, giving them another outlet at which to succeed.    Therefore, the development of athletic fields including a full track, four tennis courts, and athletic fields for baseball, soccer, softball, and sports practices was included in Phase I of Mill Springs’ long-range plan.  As declared in the school’s mission statement, Mill Springs is dedicated to the academic, social, and physical development of each student.  Our school’s leadership believes that each student deserves a full educational experience which includes instructive and competitive programs in Drama, Fine Arts and Athletics.

Campus Master Plan

Mill Springs Academy has always been led by visionary thinkers.  When our President, Robert Moore seized the opportunity to move to Alpharetta, he recognized the great potential for growth on the 85-acre property.  While most of the acreage is in a flood plain unsuitable for construction of permanent buildings, this part of the property contributes to the natural beauty of the campus and has already proved to be an invaluable resource for the school’s growing athletic department.

In early 2001, Mill Springs Academy began working with architect Geddes Dowling and Civil Engineer, Jim Hudson to examine the school’s programming needs and determine the best configuration for the campus on the 35 acres of land available for parking, septic needs, and construction of the permanent campus facilities.  The resulting plan created a welcoming, beautiful campus with a compact pedestrian center, covered walkways, and courtyards between buildings, with most driveways and parking lots placed at the periphery of the campus.

Reflecting back on the school’s rustic wooded former Sandy Springs campus, the school leadership plans to develop environmental educational opportunities, wildlife habitats, outdoor labs and teaching gardens throughout the grounds.  The buildings will be made of natural materials such as stone, brick and wood, with a “lodge-like” style, many windows and high ceilings.

The school’s master plan calls for the construction to be done in phases, sequenced according to the areas of greatest need.  The proposed phases are:

 Top

Phase One

Upper School – completed December 2003

Communications Arts – completed December 2003

PreUpper School

Athletic Fields (including soccer, baseball, track, tennis, lacrosse and cross country)

Phase Two                                                              Phase Three

Community Center                                                   Library

Middle School                                                         Fine Arts Center

Lower School                                                          Chapel

Administration                                                         Greenhouse

Library/Media Center                                               Racquetball and Handball Courts

Maintenance                                                             Natatorium

Completing Phase I of the campus master plan includes the construction of a Pre Upper school, a full track, three tennis courts, and athletic fields for soccer, baseball, and softball.  As currently configured, the 13,500 sq-ft PreUpper School will serve approximately 100 students and will contain eight classrooms, three labs, a conference room, faculty workroms and offices, a great room for 120 people.  PreUpper students will share the Upper School dining facilities.  Fortunately, many site improvements were completed when the Upper School / Communication Arts building was finished, including the infrastructure needed for the Pre Upper building, parking, and enhanced septic.

The six temporary buildings currently on the campus will continue to be used until they must be removed to serve as building sites for Phase Two and Phase Three projects.  As new facilities are constructed, the former modular units will be utilized as classroom and activity space for the Middle and Lower schools, creating expanded facilities for younger students.

Mill Springs Academy has undertaken this comprehensive planning process to meet the complex needs of the students while allowing the school to maintain its academic excellence.  With the broader plans in place, Mill Springs will continue to work on the specific details of each phase as the time for further expansion presents itself.

Investing in the Future

A successful $2.5M capital campaign will allow Mill Springs Academy to complete Phase One of its campus expansion while relying on its operating budget to continue its high standard of programming.

Supporting this project represents a smart investment in the future of Mill Springs Academy and most importantly, the lives of its present and future students.
